Former US Sen. Bill Hathaway of Maine dies at 89

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) ? Former U.S. Sen. Bill Hathaway of Maine, a Democrat who was a prisoner of war during World War II, has died at age 89.

Hathaway died Monday at his home in McLean, Va., according to daughter-in-law Lee Hathaway.

U.S. Sen. Angus King, a former Senate staffer for Hathaway, called him "a dear friend" and "cherished mentor."

U.S. Sen. Susan Collins said that although Hathaway was in a wheelchair, he was lively and engaging the last time she saw him, in January.

Hathaway parachuted from a downed B-24 bomber and was captured in Romania in 1944. The Russians eventually liberated his prison camp.

He set up a law practice in Maine, then won a U.S. House seat in 1964. Hathaway upset Margaret Chase Smith for a Senate seat in 1972 but was defeated after one term.
