sports, arts and gardening -- st. peterburg sprouts weekend fun

ST. PETERSBURG, FL (April 26, 2013) - From world-class tri-athletes and men's major league lacrosse to one of the Bay Area's largest outdoor horticultural exhibitions, Shen Yun or family painting en plein air, there's something for everyone this weekend in St. Petersburg.

On Saturday and Sunday, April 27 and 28, feel the burn along with five thousand professional tri-athletes and weekend warriors, including 650 junior athletes, ages seven through 18, running, biking and swimming to achieve their personal best in the 30th annual St. Anthony's/Meek & Mighty Triathlon.

Motorists will see road closures, detours and delays, with the heaviest impact felt with Sunday's St. Anthony's Triathlon. Motorists are advised to exercise patience and pre-plan weekend routes? through the event zone.

Meek & Mighty: On Saturday, much of the event is contained within North Shore Pool and parks north with only the bike portion utilizing city streets. Visitors to the downtown area should expect heavy traffic, road closures and delays beginning around 7:30 a.m.? Traffic will be allowed to cross the event route but only when it is safe. Officials expect the event to wrap up around 11 a.m.Parking restrictions will be in place on 19th Ave. NE and Coffee Pot Blvd. NE; North Shore Dr;? Fifth Ave. NE in front of the Vinoy Hotel; and on Bayshore Dr. to the turn at Dali Blvd. (Fifth Ave. SE).? Those who park on-street are urged to find alternate parking or remove vehicles by 5:30 a.m. Saturday to avoid receiving citations or possible vehicle relocation. Residential parking permits do not exempt vehicles from special event parking requirements. View the route map.

St. Anthony's Triathlon: On Sunday, swimmers hit the water at 6:50 a.m., followed a 26 mile bike ride at 7:10 a.m. and a 10K run at about 8:15 a.m. The event is expected to wrap up around 2 p.m.

Parking restrictions and road closures will be in place for the bike and marathon portion of the event. Those parking on-street should find alternate parking before 5 a.m. Sunday to avoid a citation or possible vehicle relocation. Traffic officials anticipate re-opening streets to normal traffic flow by 2:30 p.m.

Expect heavy congestion around Vinoy Park and North Shore Pool, where triathletes transition between events or cross the finish line. Uniformed officers will be posted at intersections to assist vehicles across the route when it is safe to do so. Motorists should anticipate delays and plan their route accordingly. Roads closed for the St. Anthony's Triathlon include Bayshore Dr. between Seventh Ave. N. and Fifth Ave. S; North Shore Dr. NE and Coffee Pot Blvd. closed between Seventh and 22nd Aves. N; Fifth Ave. S (Dali Blvd.) closed from First to Fourth Sts; and Pinellas Point Dr.

Roads subject to intermittent delays and detours include First Ave. S. between 28th and First St. S; Dr. M.L. King Jr. St. S between 18th Ave. S. and Pinellas Point Dr; and portions of First, Third, Fourth and Sixth Sts. S. between First Ave. S. and Pinellas Point Dr.

Snell Isle residents and visitors should plan ahead for Sunday morning travel since the race route impacts both Brightwaters Blvd. and the Snell Isle Bridge. While Brightwaters Blvd. will be closed between Snell Isle Blvd. and the 1900 block turnaround, limited vehicle traffic will be allowed on Snell Isle Bridge. A free two-day St. Anthony's Health and Fitness Expo in Straub Park runs through tomorrow with the latest in fitness apparel, equipment and nutritional information. The Expo is open to the public today until 7 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Event Parking: Parking is available Saturday and Sunday at either of the two city-owned garages for a special event rate of $5. Participants and spectators may park in the MidCore/BayWalk garage, 117 Second St. N., between First and Second Aves., or in South Core, 100 First Ave. S., between First and Second Sts. S.

Other weekend events: Experience the wonder and magic of classical China brought to life through choreographed dance and thrilling original compositions with Shen Yun in three performances at the Mahaffey Theater, tonight through Sunday. Reviving 5,000 years of tradition, the 2013 show features nearly 100 artists, 400 costumes and the only orchestra in the world with both classical Western and Chinese instruments as permanent members. Arbor Day meets Earth Day in one of the largest Bay Area celebrations of the environment during the Green Thumb Festival Saturday and Sunday, April 27 and 28, in Walter Fuller Park, 7891 26th Ave. N. The annual weekend festival features environmental and horticultural exhibits, a plant auction, tool sharpening, Ask an Arborist and soil diagnostic clinics, a recycling rally, live entertainment, a Children's Plant Fair, and food court. More than 2,000 trees are available for $3 each and festival freebies include mulch and butterfly plants. And browse creative floral designs and crafts interpreting gardens from around the world during the Garden Club of St. Petersburg's standard show.
