Brendon McCullum reveals third pace bowler dilemma ? Cricket News Update

New Zealand pacer, Brendon McCullum, revealed that the management is still considering its option before deciding who to include as the third seamer for the upcoming first Test against South Africa, which starts from January 2.

The Kiwi captain offered some broad insight into the composition for the opening game at Cape Town, where he himself will partner Martin Guptill at the top, and will rely on Kane Williamson, Dean Brownlie and Daniel Flynn to offer stability to the middle-order in the obvious absence of Ross Taylor.

James Franklin is most likely to carry the all-round duties for the side, where as BJ Watling will be the preferred gloveman after Kruger van Wyk was dropped from the Test team following a poor away series against Sri Lanka.

McCullum then revealed the uncertainty surrounding the pace bowling composition where as many as three players are vying for a solitary spot. Doug Bracewell will keep his place, given that he will head back home following the conclusion of the Test series as the management look to monitor his workload.

Trent Boult is another who is assured of his spot after some impressive outings against the Lankans. However, with Boult missing his usual opening partner Tim Southee, who injured himself ahead of the tour during a domestic game, it leaves them the likes of Chris Martin, Neil Wagner and Mitchell McClenaghan at their disposal.

Martin and Wagner took the field for the side during the drawn warm-up game but failed to leave a significant mark. The former took 2 scalps while the latter claimed just one as the tourists failed to break down a South African invitation XI side. As for McClenaghan, he was added to the squad as a replacement for Southee after impressing during the recently concluded T20I series.

McCullum was wary of the fact and said that a final call will be made after a periodic assessment.

"There's probably still one contentious spot and we need to make sure we do a pretty good assessment of the wicket then finalise that last place. The balance is reasonably set, we've got to make sure we select that person for the last (bowling) role," McCullum said after the drawn warm-up match in Paarl.
