Clearing the Fog Around Personality Disorders

For years they have lived as orphans and outliers, a colony of misfit characters on their own island: the bizarre one and the needy one, the untrusting and the crooked, the grandiose and the cowardly.

Their customs and rituals are as captivating as any tribe?s, and at least as mystifying. Every mental anthropologist who has visited their world seems to walk away with a different story, a new model to explain those strange behaviors.

This weekend the Board of Trustees of the American Psychiatric Association will vote on whether to adopt a new diagnostic system for some of the most serious, and striking, syndromes in medicine: personality disorders.

Personality disorders occupy a troublesome niche in psychiatry. The 10 recognized syndromes are fairly well represented on the self-help shelves of bookstores and include such well-known types as narcissistic personality disorder, avoidant personality disorder, as well as dependent and histrionic personalities.

But when full-blown, the disorders are difficult to characterize and treat, and doctors seldom do careful evaluations, missing or downplaying behavior patterns that underlie problems like depression and anxiety in millions of people.

The new proposal ? part of the psychiatric association?s effort of many years to update its influential diagnostic manual ? is intended to clarify these diagnoses and better integrate them into clinical practice, to extend and improve treatment. But the effort has run into so much opposition that it will probably be relegated to the back of the manual, if it?s allowed in at all.

Dr. David J. Kupfer, a professor of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh and chairman of the task force updating the manual, would not speculate on which way the vote might go: ?All I can say is that personality disorders were one of the first things we tackled, but that doesn?t make it the easiest.?

The entire exercise has forced psychiatrists to confront one of the field?s most elementary, yet still unresolved, questions: What, exactly, is a personality problem?

Habits of Thought

It wasn?t supposed to be this difficult.

Personality problems aren?t exactly new or hidden. They play out in Greek mythology, from Narcissus to the sadistic Ares. They percolate through biblical stories of madmen, compulsives and charismatics. They are writ large across the 20th century, with its rogues? gallery of vainglorious, murderous dictators.

Yet it turns out that producing precise, lasting definitions of extreme behavior patterns is exhausting work. It took more than a decade of observing patients before the German psychiatrist Emil Kraepelin could draw a clear line between psychotic disorders, like schizophrenia, and mood problems, like depression or bipolar disorder.

Likewise, Freud spent years formulating his theories on the origins of neurotic syndromes. And Freudian analysts were largely the ones who, in the early decades of the last century, described people with the sort of ?confounded identities? that are now considered personality disorders.

Their problems were not periodic symptoms, like moodiness or panic attacks, but issues rooted in longstanding habits of thought and feeling ? in who they were.

?These therapists saw people coming into treatment who looked well put-together on the surface but on the couch became very disorganized, very impaired,? said Mark F. Lenzenweger, a professor of psychology at the State University of New York at Binghamton. ?They had problems that were neither psychotic nor neurotic. They represented something else altogether.?

Several prototypes soon began to emerge. ?A pedantic sense of order is typical of the compulsive character,? wrote the Freudian analyst Wilhelm Reich in his 1933 book, ?Character Analysis,? a groundbreaking text. ?In both big and small things, he lives his life according to a preconceived, irrevocable pattern.?

Others coalesced too, most recognizable as extreme forms of everyday types: the narcissist, with his fragile, grandiose self-approval; the dependent, with her smothering clinginess; the histrionic, always in the thick of some drama, desperate to be the center of attention.

In the late 1970s, Ted Millon, scientific director of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Personology and Psychopathology, pulled together the bulk of the work on personality disorders, most of it descriptive, and turned it into a set of 10 standardized types for the American Psychiatric Association?s third diagnostic manual. Published in 1980, it is a best seller among mental health workers worldwide.

These diagnostic criteria held up well for years and led to improved treatments for some people, like those with borderline personality disorder. Borderline is characterized by an extreme neediness and urges to harm oneself, often including thoughts of suicide. Many who seek help for depression also turn out to have borderline patterns, making their mood problems resistant to the usual therapies, like antidepressant drugs.

Today there are several approaches that can relieve borderline symptoms and one that, in numerous studies, has reduced hospitalizations and helped aid recovery: dialectical behavior therapy.

This progress notwithstanding, many in the field began to argue that the diagnostic catalog needed a rewrite. For one thing, some of the categories overlapped, and troubled people often got two or more personality diagnoses. ?Personality Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified,? a catchall label meaning little more than ?this person has problems? became the most common of the diagnoses.

It?s a murky area, and in recent years many therapists didn?t have the time or training to evaluate personality on top of everything else. The assessment interviews can last hours, and treatments for most of the disorders involve longer-term, specialized talk therapy.

Psychiatry was failing the sort of patients that no other field could possibly help, many experts said.

?The diagnoses simply weren?t being used very much, and there was a real need to make the whole system much more accessible,? Dr. Lenzenweger said.

Resisting Simplification?

It was easier said than done.

The most central, memorable, and knowable element of any person ? personality ? still defies any consensus.

A team of experts appointed by the psychiatric association has worked for more than five years to find some unifying system of diagnosis for personality problems.

The panel proposed a system based in part on a failure to ?develop a coherent sense of self or identity.? Not good enough, some psychiatric theorists said.

Later, the experts tied elements of the disorders to distortions in basic traits.

This article has been revised to reflect the following correction:

Correction: November 29, 2012

An earlier version of this article misstated the number of traits included in the proposed criteria for?narcissistic personality disorder.?? The final proposal relies on two personality traits, not four.

Obama spotlights middle class meets with CEOs on ?fiscal cliff?

In this July 6, 2011, file photo, President Barack Obama sits in front of a screen displaying a question he tweeted??Looking for leverage in "fiscal cliff" talks with Republicans, President Barack Obama on Wednesday was to host middle-class Americans whose taxes risk going up January 1 then retreat behind closed doors for talks with top corporate executives. The White House also worked to enlist support on Twitter, highlighting a hashtag, #My2K, for tweets about the standoff.

Obama planned to deliver a speech at 11:35 a.m. to press Congress to extend Bush-era tax cuts on income up to $200,000 for individuals and $250,000 for families ? surrounded by Americans who stand to be affected when those reductions expire January 1.

The White House says that "a typical middle class family of four" would pay Uncle Sam an additional $2,200 unless those tax cuts are extended. Obama campaigned for reelection in large part on the argument that tax cuts that chiefly benefit the richest Americans? must expire in order to save popular government programs that face the axe. Republicans argue that will reduce investments that generate jobs at a time when the economy is still sputtering, with unemployment stubbornly high. The GOP has signaled it would be willing to consider boosting tax revenues as long as Democrats agree to overhaul popular entitlement programs like Medicare or Medicaid.

That $2,200 figure is the inspiration for #My2K, part of what the White House describes as an "online push" behind the president's approach. Obama has highlighted Twitter hashtags in past disputes with Republicans: #40dollars in the fight over the payroll tax holiday and #dontdoublemyrate in a feud over student loans.

The president, who spoke to top Republican and Democratic leaders over the weekend, was to make brief public remarks at the top of a meeting with his cabinet at 3 pm before huddling with senior executives from major American corporations.

Here is the list of attendees, as provided by the White House:

  • Frank Blake, Chairman and CEO, The Home Depot
  • Lloyd Blankfein, Chairman and CEO, Goldman Sachs Group
  • Joe Echeverria, CEO, Deloitte LLP
  • Ken Frazier, President and CEO, Merck and Co.
  • Muhtar Kent, Chairman and CEO, Coca Cola
  • Terry Lundgren, Chairman, President, and CEO, Macy's Inc.
  • Marissa Mayer, CEO and President, Yahoo!
  • Douglas Oberhelman, Chairman and CEO, Caterpillar
  • Ian Read, Chairman and CEO, Pfizer
  • Brian Roberts, Chairman and CEO, Comcast
  • Ed Rust, Chairman and CEO, State Farm Insurance Co.
  • Arne Sorenson, President and CEO, Marriott
  • Randall Stephenson, Chairman and CEO, AT&T
  • Patricia Woertz, President and CEO, Archer Daniels Midland

The "fiscal cliff" refers to an economically painful set of tax hikes and deep spending cuts that come into effect January 1 unless Congress and the president reach a deal.

Zig Ziglar | Business PR News

Zig Ziglar will always live in my heart.? We can always learn from all that Zig has left on earth for all of us to learn from him.

Stubborn and hardheaded me! ?For years, even as I was hearing so many great things about Zig Ziglar and his great messages, speeches, news, books and audio cassettes and CDs, I had always avoided Zig and all his famous material.?

Needless to say, I've never bought a thing that had anything Zig Ziglar related.? I felt that I can do it all without learning from him.? Well, I was wrong; deeply wrong.?

Zig Ziglar, was a wonderful person, no air of importance, a very humble and gentle person to talk with.? I met Zig face to face, by faith and by chance, yes, I met him as he called out my name in the audience.? I?told him that I've been avoiding him all my life.? He laughed, and so did I.?

Here, I collected the memories online and my story of "How I Met Zig Ziglar, the Great Person that I've Avoided All My Life" on this site, as a memoir that I?dedicate to Zig Ziglar.

Kinds of Properties Involved in Commercial Real Estate

Commercial property investing consists of putting a large amount of money directly into properties that have known commercial or company value including malls, buildings, resorts and so on. It is a rewarding way to earn money especially if the region where the developing is located is extremely populated.

The key types of components that you can typically put your money in are offices, industrial factories, retail marketplace centers and apartment unit buildings. Most of these real estate properties reveal a common denominator which is they all have tenants that will shell out good money with regard to commercial lease space. You can find of course a number of tenants in which fall into different categories for instance office tenants usually book long-term and tend to be a particular region as long as the organization is doing properly. Retail store tenants tend to be cheaper than office tenants et cetera Wood Ranch real estate .

Figuring out Factors inside Commercial Real Estate

Internet operating cash flow or NOI is a vital determining element when investing in commercial real estate. NOI is basically calculated by the sum of the property?s yearly hire and subtracting the prices incurred which are not part of cash or required to rental new regions. The value of commercial real estate properties usually are determined by splitting the net running income through the sale cost or cap. The rationale may be the greater the property?s income in spite of its cap rate, the higher its total value.

Whilst capital costs as well as rental costs are generally not included in the internet operating salary of the property, it is recommended that you take all of them seriously simply because they play an important role inside the overall dividends. For example, it wouldn?t be unconventional for a property owner to say reduce 20% of the lease in order to signal a actuel when the economic climate is weak.

When you are looking to get financing to get a commercial real estate house, the amount of money you?ll get will be based for the income your property creates. Banks and lending businesses will significantly scrutinize your financial troubles coverage percentage which is the quotient when dividing the yearly internet operating cash flow with an yearly mortgage payment. If your net running income tends to be lesser compared to the mortgage payments, financial institutions would reject you the financing Agoura Hills real estate .

Top 10 Reasons Why You Should Invest In Mining Stocks

-- Posted Wednesday, 28 November 2012 | | Source: GoldSeek.com

By Tekoa Da Silva

Disclaimer: This article does not constitute financial advice. Always consult a qualified financial professional before making any investment decisions.

In consideration of the muted share price performance of the mining sector?here are the top ten reasons to consider investing in mining stocks?

1. They Go Down ? The extreme share price volatility expressed in the mining sector represents probably it?s best attribute. As we both know, volatility scares the heck out of people, and extreme volatility shakes out the fair weathers?creating amazing buying opportunities for those who understand what volatility offers.

2. Nationalization of Mines - It is true many countries in the world today are taking action against qualified companies developing natural resource deposits. Their actions usually include appropriating the property, removing competent developers, and installing incompetent developers. Once the asset begins to crumble, the country again opens it?s doors, and asks for outside help. Large, influential companies may effectively navigate these waters, but most lack the financial power to handle such an assault. Therefore, strong premiums will develop in the share prices of companies in favorable jurisdictions. The safest in the world might include the U.S., Australia, Mexico, and of course Canada, which might be the safest.

3. It?s Just Paper ? In a period of growing concern over paper assets, financial firm and stock brokerage bankruptcies are becoming common. The level of anxiety in the Western financial system is growing, with the gold and silver community representing those with the most distrust towards the system. However, the accumulation of this distrust over time?results in simply weaker share prices. This equates to cheaper shares for investors to purchase, and potentially cheaper acquisitions for companies and funds looking to buy. One might also say??But if the broker goes bankrupt?your paper will be worthless.? Sure, if there is fraud on behalf of the broker, that can happen. But in a recent conversation with a transfer agent at ComputerShare, I was told, ?It?s mostly financial firms and corporations who use direct registration and paper share certificates,??both of which, are available to individual investors(to read my report on these methods, please see BulletProof Shares).

4. Manipulation ? It?s commonly believed that the US Federal Reserve and Global Central Banks, are actively shorting and suppressing gold and silver, along with the mining stocks. I?ve heard this story for years now. Every time the metals go down, there is ?manipulation? involved. But what about when the metals go up? Why don?t people complain about the excessively high gold prices? In my opinion, manipulation is a scapegoat for impatience and poor investment timing.

?Billy, why did you eat all the cookies??, ?Sorry mom, the devil made me do it. It was his fault?if he didn?t make me do it, I wouldn?t be in this mess!?

If suppressive manipulation in the metals market is occuring, investors should be toasting champagne and hoping the manipulation lasts as long as possible, as manipulated markets usually result in shortages or price explosions.

5. They Don?t Go Up With Gold ? Anyone who?s invested in mining shares for more than the last few years, knows that they outperform the metals. Since 2008 however, they have lagged. Does this mean they will lag the metals for the rest of eternity? Yes, if only four years of history negate the last 100+. In the markets, ?temporary dislocations? can last years. Look at long term government bonds for example. Many would say that, ?based on the last 30 years, they?ve been going up. That is proof they will go up for the next 30 years.? There is always a tipping point in which the dislocation snaps the other way with the same severity. That point cannot be predicted, and the money is made in defying the belief that, ?this is the new normal.? Just for the record the Gold Bugs Index bottomed at 36 in 2000, and sits at 445 today. That represents over a 12x-fold move since the bull market began! Gold moved from $250 to $1750 in comparison, a roughly 7x-fold move.

6. They?re At Historical Lows and Going Lower ? Compared against the metals, mining shares are at their lowest levels in nearly 30 years. A 100 year old man was talking about this recently, indicating it has only happened about 5 times in the last 100 years, but as usual, wisdom falls on deaf ears, and in the world of investments that equates opportunity. I seem to recall one of the great investors of our generation, Jim Rogers, saying something along the lines of, he?d ?rather buy something when it?s near an all-time historical low, rather than when its at an all time high.? It should be noted he prefers commodities themselves over the companies which produce them, but the historical dislocation represents something. What that something IS of course, is for you to decide.

7. The Charts Look Horrible ? One of the most common things I?ve heard all year long, is that, ?The charts looks horrible.? What the heck does that mean anyway? Does it mean the company is going to go bankrupt? Does it mean a chart qualifies a company first and foremost? If the chart looked ?great?, would it then not be the buying opportunity is currently is? Isn?t deep value usually scorned by the market precisely because it looks terrible on the outset? Can the same be said about a car?or a piece of real estate?if it?s all dirty and beat-up?does that mean it?s worthless?

The ?horrible? looking 12 year HUI chart

8. They Have Not Confirmed Themselves - Once something confirms and validates itself, it is no longer what it once was. For example, two boys argue over a green worm. One says it?s a green worm, the other says it?s a butterfly. They bet 2 packs of gummy bears on the argument. They then place the green worm in a box and observe it over the next 21 days. The worm creates a cocoon, and emerges a few days later as a butterfly. Who was right and who was wrong? They were both right, and they were both wrong. But only one made money(or gummy bears) on the deal. Once something validates itself as being the thing in which defies believe, the investment opportunity is gone, and the gummies will have been eaten.

9. George Soros Is Getting Involved - For some strange reason, many people in the world resent success, especially extreme financial success. Enter George Soros, arguably one of the most hated men in the investment world, outside of maybe former IMF chief, Dominique Strauss-Kahn. But the thing to pay attention to here, is that George didn?t become one of the world?s wealthiest men by being an idiot. He built his empire through shrewd investments and business dealings. Those who seek wealth are better advised to learn from those have accomplished such ends, rather than those who advise buying survival kits and hiding out in the woods. As a refresher on the very large positions Soros Fund Management has recently taken in mining stocks, read: The Soros Position Nobody is Talking About

10. Societal Collapse ? As some busily prepare for the collapse of society, others (most of whom are far wealthier) are busy creating plans for, and building a fortune. Numerous fund managers are buying large chunks of mining companies, and some are buying entire companies outright. Mine developers see this as an amazing opportunity to acquire projects and are scooping them up. If you know more than them about the sector, and have the self-built wealth to prove it (not just the opinion), by all means, let me know.

Reflection

If we allow logic to be our guide in the marketplace at this point in time, it would behoove ourselves to consider the most hated sectors of the marketplace, those in which the former cheerleaders have packed up their belongings and gone home. I contest the gold and silver miners might constitute one of those areas.

As John Wayne once said, ?Life?s hard. It?s even harder when you?re stupid?. Therefore, let us consult only with the actions and words of those who have already accomplished what we seek and set out to accomplish, and ignore everything and everyone else.

All the best,
Tekoa Da Silva

Updated 3:01 p.m.

After being walloped by Latino voters in the election, the Republican Party?s first?conciliatory?immigration bill?may result in the same?Congressional gridlock that has stalled?previous attempts at reform. Moreover, it is directed at a small sliver U.S. immigrants, calling into question the seriousness of the GOP.

The House will vote on the Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM)?Jobs Act later this week, a?bill that?would give visas to foreigners with high-tech degrees from American universities, while eliminating a program that offers visas to poorer immigrants through a lottery to underrepresented countries.

An earlier version of bill was defeated in the House in September after 80% of Democrats voted against it. At the time,?the House?s Hispanic Caucus, Congressional Black Caucus and Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus all came out against it.

However, this version of the bill is expected to include?a family-friendly provision that would allow the families of legal immigrants, those with green cards, to wait for their own visas within the United States, thus reuniting spouses and children. The AP put the impact at 322,000 husbands, wives, and children who are currently waiting to join a family member in the United States.

Yet, House Democrats say the bill is an effort to appear more pro-immigration, particularly as few expect it to pass in the Senate. ?It is not very much to sweeten the pot for Democrats,? one Democratic House staffer told MSNBC.com.

The bill ?is more about politics and optics for the Republicans than about anything substantive,? Rep. Luis Gutierrez, the chair of the Immigration Task Force of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus told MSNBC.com. ?Republicans are more interested in killing the Diversity Visa program, which goes mostly to immigrants from Africa, than in creating a program for science and tech graduates.?

The STEM bill offers 55,000 visas to high-tech graduates of American universities and their families. It would function by eliminating the Diversity Visa program, an initiative that gives visas to immigrants from countries?typically in Africa and Latin America?with low rates of U.S. immigration and reallocating those visas into the STEM program.

?We don?t really fix the problem by having a zero-sum approach.? Bob Sakaniwa, the associate director of advocacy at the American Immigration Lawyers Association, explained. ?They don?t have enough green cards for legitimate demand.?

Rep. Lamar Smith, the Republican from Texas who sponsored the bill, said that the Diversity Visa program ?invites fraud and is a threat to our national security.? By attracting science and math doctoral graduates, Smith?argued the STEM bill would further economic progress.

?We cannot afford to educate these foreign graduates in the U.S. and then send them back home to work for our competitors,? he said in a statement to MSNBC.com.

Sakaniwa said that while there have been issues and reported security loopholes with the Diversity Visa Program, it doesn?t mean the entire program should be scrapped: ?It?s one thing to try and fix flaws in the system, it?s another thing to throw out the baby with the bath water,? he said.

House Democrats?claimed the re-introduction of the bill with the new family-friendly concession?is a last-ditch effort to appear more pro-immigration, but worry that it signals continued anti-immigration views that could obstruct comprehensive reform in the New Year.

Rep. Zoe Lofgren, the top Democrat on the House Immigration Subcommittee, introduced a competing bill, which she called the ?Attracting the Best and the Brightest? act, that would maintain the Diversity Visa program as well as add STEM visas.

?Republicans know they have an anti-immigrant image problem, yet, unfortunately, they are proceeding with the Smith bill to pretend they?re pro-immigrant, even though it is a divisive bill that actually reduces legal immigration,? Lofgren said.

Democratic staffers say the bill may reduce immigration numbers?because the number of STEM graduates seeking visas could fluctuate over time. The bill allows unused visas to roll over for the first four years, but after that, unused visas would disappear. Other portions of immigration law allow unused visas in programs to roll over into other programs, helping to meet demand.

Rep. Gutierrez also sees a party-wide opposition to immigration.

?The Republicans are still looking at immigration through the old lens that legal immigration is a problem that must be eliminated or never increased,? he said. ?We don?t need to eliminate immigration for one group to allow immigration for another, we can and will reform immigration so that we have a controlled and legal flow that benefits the economy and keeps families together. But that is not what the Republicans are doing this week.?

Senate Republicans also tried on immigration reform proposals for?size,?introducing a limited version of the DREAM Act Tuesday. That competing bill, introduced by outgoing Sens. John Kyl and Kay Bailey Hutchison,?would not put undocumented students on a path to citizenship as the Democratic version would do, instead allowing students to apply for extended visas at three different junctures,??enabling them to stay in the country while they navigate existing channels to citizenship.

Correction: An earlier version of this story implied the family-friendly provision applied only to immigrants with?high-tech degrees, those who fall under the STEM model. In fact, the new provision is broader than that and applies to families of green card holders who are currently waiting outside the U.S. to be rejoined with their family member.

Weak economy keeps adult kids in the house

8 hrs.

You raise them, you educate them and you expect them to go out into the world. But they keep coming back.?

The recession and weak recovery appears to be keeping many adult children from getting a home of their own, and that could have implications for the housing industry?s recovery.

A Census Bureau report released Wednesday found that between 2007 and 2011 there was a steady increase in the percentage of adults living in someone else?s house ? and that increase has mostly been driven by adult children moving in with mom and dad.

In 2011, Census Bureau researchers found that 17.9 percent of people 18 and older, or 41.2 million people, lived in a house in which they weren?t the head of the household or that person?s spouse or significant other. That?s up from 16 percent in 2007, before the nation went into recession.

About half of those people were adult children living with their parents, while the rest were other relatives or unrelated people such as a group of roommates.

But Suzanne Macartney, an analyst in the poverty statistics branch of the Census Bureau and a co-author of the report, said the only group that saw an increase between 2007 and 2011 were adults moving in with their parents.

The nation was officially in recession from December of 2007 until June of 2009, but economic growth has largely been slow and unsteady in the years since.

The Census data runs through 2011. This year, economists have seen some signs that the housing industry is starting to recover, although there have been some bumps in the road.

There also have been more recent signs that housing formation is picking up, which would be good news for the economy and perhaps offer a sign that some young adults are moving out of mom and dad?s house. But economists caution that the improvements seen so far are not yet?enough to offset the shortfall caused by the Great Recession and weak recovery.

If?a significant number of adult children continue to bunk with mom and dad, economics caution that?that could slow the housing industry?s recovery because those people won?t be out buying or renting homes of their own.

?It does have a negative impact,? said Joel Naroff, economist with Naroff Ecoomic Advisors. ?The question is why is it happening.?

One potential reason: They may not have a paycheck to pay the rent or mortgage.

The unemployment rate for 20- to 24-year-olds was 13.2 percent in October, far above the overall rate of 7.9 percent. For 25- to 34-year-olds, it was 8.3 percent, still higher than for the general population.

Naroff said another major factor weighing on young adults is student loan debt, which is approaching $1 trillion by some estimates. The burden of those monthly payments may be keeping some younger adults from paying the rent on their own, let alone buying a house, even if they do have a job.

?You have a lot of the kids coming out with debt, and they?re not going out and buying houses, and that may be pushing out the whole process,? he said.

Naroff said it?s not yet clear how much of the problem is a cyclical one, caused by the high unemployment rate among young adults, and how much is a structural problem caused the increased burden of student loan debts leaving less money for things like homes.

If it?s mainly an issue of unemployment, he believes it could resolve itself in the next few years. But if the burden of student loan debts are keeping people from buying homes, that could be a longer-term problem.

It?s an issue he?s intimately familiar with. Naroff has a son who is graduating from college in a couple weeks. In the short term, Naroff said his son plans to do some graduate work. But after that, he?ll have to find a job.

?I?m already readying my extra bedroom for him,? Naroff quipped.

(AP) ? Amid the ash, broken glass and melted sewing machines at what is left of the Tazreen Fashions Ltd. factory, there are piles of blue, red and off-white children's shorts bearing Wal-Mart's Faded Glory brand. Blue and off-white shorts from hip-hop star Sean Combs' ENYCE label lay on the floor and are stacked in cartons.

An Associated Press reporter searching the factory Wednesday found those clothes and others, including sweaters from the French company Teddy Smith, among the charred equipment in the fire that killed 112 workers Saturday. He also found entries in account books indicating that the factory took orders to produce clothes for Disney, Sears and other Western brands.

Garments and documents left behind in the factory show it was used by a host of major American and European retailers, though at least one of them ? Wal-Mart ? had been aware of safety problems. Wal-Mart blames a supplier for using Tazreen Fashions without its knowledge.

The fire has elevated awareness of something labor groups, retailers and governments have known for years: Bangladesh's fast-growing garment industry ? second only to China's in exports ? is rife with dangerous workplaces. More than 300 workers there have died in fires since 2006.

Police on Wednesday arrested three factory officials suspected of locking in the workers who died in Saturday's fire, the deadliest in the South Asian country's less than 35-year history of exporting clothing.

Local police chief Habibur Rahman said three were arrested and will be questioned about the fire amid reports that many workers trying to escape the blaze had been locked inside. He said the owner of the factory was not among those arrested.

The officials were arrested Wednesday at their homes in Savar, the Dhaka suburb where the factory is also located.

Rahman did not identify the factory officials or give their job status.

Workers who survived the fire say exit doors were locked, fire extinguishers didn't work and managers had told them to go back to work after the fire alarm rang. A fire official has said that far fewer people would have died if there had been just one emergency exit.

Windows at the eight-story factory are broken, sewing machines melted or burned to ash. Much of the clothing on the lower floors was incinerated. Nightgowns, children's shorts, pants, jackets and sweat shirts were strewn about, piled up in some places, boxed in others.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Interior Minister Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir have said arson is suspected. Police say they have not ruled out sabotage.

Wal-Mart had received an audit deeming the factory "high risk" last year, said it had decided to stop doing business with Tazreen, but that a supplier subcontracted work to the factory anyway. Wal-Mart said it stopped working with that supplier on Monday.

Calls made to The Walt Disney Company and to Sears Holdings were not immediately returned.

Local TV reports said about 3,000 garment workers held protests over the fire Wednesday, blocking roads and throwing stones at some factories and vehicles. It was the third straight day of demonstrations, and as they did previously, factories in the area closed to avoid violence.

Police used batons to disperse the protesters, but no injuries were immediately reported.

According to local television, most factories in the area closed after opening briefly because of the protests ? a common tactic to avoid violence.

Silversea Cruises Schedules Call at Banana Coast, Honduras ...

Silversea Cruises is the first cruise line to sign on to call at Banana Coast, the newest western Caribbean cruise destination at Trujillo, Honduras. The 296-passenger Silver Cloud is scheduled to call Dec. 17, 2014.

Silversea has been recognized by leading consumer and trade publications as defining the ultra-luxury cruise experience. In the United States Silversea was voted ?World?s Best? by readers of Cond? Nast Traveler nine times and Travel & Leisure seven times, and was awarded ?Best Cruise Line for Luxury Small Ships? by Luxury Travel Advisor in 2011.

?We are pleased to have a high-end brand like Silversea Cruises be the first to commit to call at Banana Coast,? said Michael Greve, president of Global Destinations Development, one of the companies partnering in the port project. ?It?s a testament to how we have carefully created a destination that is culturally and historically appealing to the most sophisticated travelers.?

Greve said construction at Banana Coast, which began in August 2011, is now 80 percent complete, and the facility is expected to have a soft opening in January 2013. The port will be open to host ships throughout 2013 and beyond.

?We have met with several other cruise lines and have hosted site inspections by cruise line executives,? said Greve. ?We expect that several lines soon will commit to adding Banana Coast to their itineraries.?

Plans for Banana Coast Landing call for construction of a 50,000-square-foot shopping facility and transportation hub on 10 acres of beachfront land. Themed ?Where the Rainforest Meets the Sea,? the $20 million Banana Coast project currently employs 150 construction workers, engineers and architects. A future phase will see construction of a two-berth, post-Panamax pier.

In March 2012, the developers unveiled an ambitious and diverse shore excursion program designed to offer something for everyone, including cultural, soft-adventure and eco-tour offerings.

The tours enable guests to explore the area from land, air and sea. In addition to the signature tour ? Campo del Mar Nature Park & Beach Break ? highlights include a VIP airplane ride to the Mayan ruins at Copan; a snorkeling adventure at a beautiful starfish bank, and kayaking in the pristine Guaimoreto Lagoon. Guests looking to stay on land have the chance to discover the port?s appeal through an exciting mountain ATV ride, a culinary tasting tour or a trolley ride through the colonial town of Trujillo.

Future plan phases include creation of the 100-acre Campo del Mar, which will incorporate an integrated heritage park, river park, wildlife park and nature park ? all easily accessible from Banana Coast Landing.

Tax increment financing district (TIF) resources ? State Politics

Resources on tax increment financing (TIF) districts.

Wichita should reject Bowllagio TIF district. Wichita should reject the formation of a harmful tax increment financing (TIF) district.

Wichita TIF: Taxpayer-funded benefits to political players. It is now confirmed: In Wichita, tax increment financing (TIF) leads to taxpayer-funded waste that benefits those with political connections at city hall.

Tax increment financing (TIF) and economic growth. There is clear and consistent evidence that municipalities that adopt tax increment financing, or TIF, grow more slowly after adoption than those that do not.

Does tax increment financing (TIF) deliver on its promise of jobs? When looking at the entire picture, the effect on employment of tax increment financing, or TIF districts, used for retail development is negative.

Crony Capitalism and Social Engineering: The Case against Tax-Increment Financing. Randal O?Toole, Cato Institute. While cities often claim that TIF is ?free money? because it represents the taxes collected from developments that might not have taken place without the subsidy, there is plenty of evidence that this is not true. First, several studies have found that the developments subsidized by TIF would have happened anyway in the same urban area, though not necessarily the same location. Second, new developments impose costs on schools, fire departments, and other urban services, so other taxpayers must either pay more to cover those costs or accept a lower level of services as services are spread to developments that are not paying for them. Moreover, rather than promoting economic development, many if not most TIF subsidies are used for entirely different purposes. First, many states give cities enormous discretion for how they use TIF funds, turning TIF into a way for cities to capture taxes that would otherwise go to rival tax entities such as school or library districts. Second, no matter how well-intentioned, city officials will always be tempted to use TIF as a vehicle for crony capitalism, providing subsidies to developers who in turn provide campaign funds to politicians.

Tax Increment Financing: A Tool for Local Economic Development. Richard F. Dye and David F. Merriman. Tax increment financing (TIF) is an alluring tool that allows municipalities to promote economic development by earmarking property tax revenue from increases in assessed values within a designated TIF district. Proponents point to evidence that assessed property value within TIF districts generally grows much faster than in the rest of the municipality and infer that TIF benefits the entire municipality. Our own empirical analysis, using data from Illinois, suggests to the contrary that the non-TIF areas of municipalities that use TIF grow no more rapidly, and perhaps more slowly, than similar municipalities that do not use TIF.

The effects of tax increment financing on economic development. Richard F. Dye and David F. Merriman. Local governments attempt to influence business location decisions and economic development through use of the property tax. Tax increment financing (TIF) sequesters property tax revenues that result from growth in assessed valuation. The TIF revenues are to be used for economic development projects but may also be diverted for other purposes. We have constructed an extensive data set for the Chicago metropolitan area that includes information on property value growth before and after TIF adoption. In contrast to the conventional wisdom, we find evidence that cities that adopt TIF grow more slowly than those that do not. We test for and reject sample selection bias as an explanation of this finding. We argue that our empirical finding is plausible and present a theoretical argument explaining why TIF might reduce municipal growth.

TIF is not Free Money. Randal O?Toole. Originally created with good intentions, tax-increment financing (TIF) has become a way for city officials to enhance their power by taking money from schools and other essential urban services and giving it to politically connected developers. It is also often used to promote the social engineering goals of urban planners. ? Legislators should recognize that TIF no longer has a reason to exist, and it didn?t even work when it did. They should repeal the laws allowing cities to use TIF and encourage cities to instead rely on developers who build things that people want, not things that planners think they should have.

Does Tax Increment Financing Deliver on Its Promise of Jobs? The Impact of Tax Increment Financing on Municipal Employment Growth. Paul F. Byrne. Increasingly, municipal leaders justify their use of tax increment financing (TIF) by touting its role in improving municipal employment. However, empirical studies on TIF have primarily examined TIF?s impact on property values, ignoring the claim that serves as the primary justification for its use. This article addresses the claim by examining the impact of TIF adoption on municipal employment growth in Illinois, looking for both general impact and impact specific to the type of development supported. Results find no general impact of TIF use on employment. However, findings suggest that TIF districts supporting industrial development may have a positive effect on municipal employment, whereas TIF districts supporting retail development have a negative effect on municipal employment. These results are consistent with industrial TIF districts capturing employment that would have otherwise occurred outside of the adopting municipality and retail TIF districts shifting employment within the municipality to more labor-efficient retailers within the TIF district.

Tax Increment Financing and Missouri: An Overview Of How TIF Impacts Local Jurisdictions. Paul F. Byrne. Tax Increment Financing (TIF) has become a common economic development tool throughout the United States. TIF takes the new taxes that a development generates and directs a portion of them to repay the costs of the project itself. ? Supporters of TIF argue that it is a necessary tool for redevelopment in older communities. Detractors contend that it is used to simply subsidize development, and that variances in tax systems allow some governments to implement and benefit from TIF even if its use harms other levels of government. This study provides an overview of the history and basic structure of TIF. It then analyzes the basic tax components of a TIF plan and compares how various aspects, such as tax capture and tax competition, play out in the standard system of TIF. The study then reviews the economic literature on TIF, and ends with a direct application of how TIF operates within Missouri.

The Right Tool for the Job? An analysis of Tax Increment Financing. Heartland Institute. Tax Increment Financing (TIF) is an economic development tool that uses the expected growth (or increment) in property tax revenues from a designated geographic area of a municipality to finance bonds used to pay for goods and services calculated to spur growth in the TIF district. The analysis performed for this study found TIF does not tend to produce a net increase in economic activity; favors large businesses over small businesses; often excludes local businesses and residents from the planning process; and operates in a manner that contradicts conventional notions of justice and fairness. We recommend seeking alternatives to TIF and reforms to TIF that make the process more democratic and the distribution of benefits more fair to residents of TIF districts.

Giving Away the Store to Get a Store. Daniel McGraw, Reason. Largely because it promises something for nothing ? an economic stimulus in exchange for tax revenue that otherwise would not materialize ? this tool is becoming increasingly popular across the country. Originally used to help revive blighted or depressed areas, TIFs now appear in affluent neighborhoods, subsidizing high-end housing developments, big-box retailers, and shopping malls. And since most cities are using TIFs, businesses such as Cabela?s can play them off against each other to boost the handouts they receive simply to operate profit-making enterprises. ? At a time when local governments? efforts to foster development, from direct subsidies to the use of eminent domain to seize property for private development, are already out of control, TIFs only add to the problem: Although politicians portray TIFs as a great way to boost the local economy, there are hidden costs they don?t want taxpayers to know about. Cities generally assume they are not really giving anything up because the forgone tax revenue would not have been available in the absence of the development generated by the TIF. That assumption is often wrong.

Do Tax Increment Finance Districts in Iowa Spur Regional Economic and Demographic Growth? David Swenson and Liesl Eathington. We found virtually no statistically meaningful economic, fiscal, and social correlates with this practice in our assessment; consequently, the evidence that we analyzed suggests that net positions are not being enhanced ? that the overall expected benefits do not exceed the public?s costs.

For Black Moth Super Rainbow, Barrel-Aged ... - Food Republic

"I?m not a big burger guy or anything, but Kuma?s is pretty fucking phenomenal," says Fec.

?

Touring musicians have a great gig. Rock and roll! It?s doubly great when they?re interested in exploring the international culinary world. We do realize some bands subsist solely on Taco Bell and Coke Zero. Shame on them! There?s Hatch chile to sample in New Mexico.?Pappy Van Winkle?in Kentucky. Doppelbock outside Hamburg. Tortas on the California-Mexico border. In?Good Food, Rocks, we track down a band member serious about their grub ? and who has held a job in the food industry too.

?When I?m recording, eating becomes kind of a burden,? reveals Black Moth Super Rainbow creative center Tobacco (n? Tom Fec). ?When I get into the zone, I just want to go for 16 hours straight. I dump a can of chickpeas into a bowl and try to drink them down as fast as possible.?

The statement, which comes at the end of a 30-minute call with the Pittsburgh musician, is a bit of a shocker, as we've just talked extensively about barrel-aging Negronis, Pequod?s vs. Burts (it?s a Chicago pizza thing), Philly chef Marc Vetri and the masterful barbecue at his hometown favorite Union Pig and Chicken. It turns out that homeboy is really into food, but aparently art comes first. And bless him for it. BMSR's latest album, Cobra Juicy, is one of the year?s best ? a collection of songs built around Reagan-era analog synths and tape machines mingling with everything from Beck guitar licks to the bass lines and buzz saws of a midnight Justice?set. You can hear it live in a city near you. And if you like it, buy the man a bourbon. Small batch, of course. ??

Have you had any jobs in the food service industry?
I was a busboy at an upscale Italian place for one day. The owner was weird, the manager was weird and everyone just sucked, so I just didn?t come back.

So that?s your food career right there?
I actually always wanted to work at a pizza place and I still kind of do, but I never did it. Maybe one day, just for fun.

What?s your fascination with pizza?
It?s not even the pizza. I guess I just created a fantasy in my head where hanging out with friends, driving around and delivering pizzas to all these weird people in town would just be so much fun. I?m at that point where I definitely don?t need to get any kind of job, but want that all to be kind of my hobby.

Do you like pizza? Do you make it at home?
I don?t make it, but I like it. I?m getting pickier as I get older I think. When you find really good shit, it?s hard to then go back. There?s this one place in town that?s about a half-hour outside of the city that not a lot of people know about. The crust is almost a pastry ? it?s buttery and the sauce is really sweet. I?ve never had anything even similar to it. It?s called Jioio?s.

Tell me more about the dining scene in Pittsburgh? It?s pretty underrated and dare I say unknown.
Yeah, you just have to dig in. Over the past two years some things have really popped up. I wouldn?t say it exploded here or anything, and it?s not like you have a shitload of options. But you can find one or two of each type of food that is amazing, even better than other cities. I don?t want to start a controversy, but I think some of the best things that I?ve had here are better than I?ve had in New York.

Let?s start some controversy?
We have this barbecue called Union Pig and Chicken. I?m going to guess that people around here would consider [Kevin Sousa] our local star chef because he also owns Salt of the Earth and runs this hot dog place. Union Pig and Chicken is hands-down the best barbecue I?ve ever had, including in the South.

And you?ve toured the South, like Texas and Mississippi?
Yeah. I?d say the second best I?ve ever had was in St. Louis ? I can?t remember the name of the place ? but I?ve been everywhere in the country and this guy has the best barbecue. It?s not even close.

What food item that Pittsburgh is known for?
Well, that?s the thing. I?m not proud of what Pittsburgh is known for. I hate this because any time I have friends who are coming through, they are like, ?We have to go to Primanti Brothers!? And that?s fucking gross. Have you heard of this place?

Yeah, it?s like a place that you see on The Food Network?
Probably, I?m sure. It?s what we?re most famous for, which is really any kind of shitty sandwich covered in coleslaw and fries. They?re open all night, which is their thing, but it?s just trash. Greasy food is great, but they don?t even do that well [laughs]. I?m going to get killed if anyone from Pittsburgh sees this!

It?s like delis getting a lot of press in New York, but they all fucking suck. What are some of your favorite cities around the world for the food?
Number two would be Philly and that?s mainly because one of my best friends from high school works at a few restaurants there. He works at Osteria and Vetri. He knows how to show us around, so I?m a little biased towards that city. In terms of finding stuff on my own, my favorite city is Chicago.

Where do you like eating in Chicago?
I?m not a big burger guy or anything, but Kuma?s is pretty fucking phenomenal. I?ve never had a burger that good anywhere else. Then the pizza ? if you go outside of that typical Chicago pizza ? there?s a place called Pequod?s. The guy who started Pequod?s left and is doing his own thing at Burt?s. Pequod?s is amazing and most people would say it?s better, but I like Burt?s even more because it?s more eccentric and apparently the guy picks up all of the shit on the way in to work. Everything is super fresh and it?s made with care because he?s the only one back there.

What food and drink is on your tour rider when you?re on the road?
I like to go really simple. The hardest thing to find when you?re on tour and waiting at a venue is fruits and vegetables, and that?s all that I want. I need blueberries, avocados, broccoli, celery, strawberries and shit like that. And you don?t always get it.

You sound like you?re pretty health-conscious? Do you drink?
I?m pretty healthy. I like a good cocktail or a really good liquor. If it?s something different, I?m totally down.

What kind of cocktails do you like?
My friend in Philly designs the alcohol menu for the Vetri restaurants and got me into Negronis hardcore. We got a barrel here at our house and I?ve been aging my own kind of Negronis. Artichoke Negronis.

Oh, with Cynar?
Yeah, yeah.

Why barrel-age a cocktail?
It just mellows out. Especially a drink like a Negroni. Campari is fucking rough. It?s like ehhhh and gets into your throat. The barrel takes the edge off of it and totally smooths it out. It?s really nice. We got into that because there?s a place in Pittsburgh called Meat and Potatoes and they started doing barrel-aged Manhattans and Negronis recently, and it?s the best shit ever.

What kind of gin do you use in your Negronis?
We?ve still been working on the best. Since we only have one barrel, we can only make it once a month. We?re still working it out. We?ve tried every kind. The latest batch was Bombay and that was pretty good.

Bombay is good. I personally like Beefeater because it has great juniper and isn?t too citrusy.
My favorite is Hendrick?s, but it?s too much for a Negroni.

What other cocktails do you like to make at home or order on the road?
I just like really simple stuff usually. When we?re on the road, unless we?re at an amazing cocktail place, I?d rather get something straight. Some people just go overboard ? even when you order something normal that you think is simple, it?s all sugared up. It?s just nasty. We?ll just try to find like one Prohibition-era kind of place in town and get one thing that?s really good. The best drinks that we?ve probably ever had were at Village Whiskey in Philadelphia. The burger is actually almost at Kuma?s level too.

Do you cook at home?
Not really. I like to eat stuff really plain ? cut up an avocado, eat some celery. I think the most complex I like to get is like broccoli with pasta sauce. I like to eat really clean.

Why eat clean?
I don?t know. I like to run a lot and when you?re digesting easier, it makes everything go smoother and I feel better. Right now, I?m so tired ? we just got home from tour yesterday ? I?m so tired from changing up my routine and eating so much crap. I couldn?t wait until this morning to just have blueberries and flaxseed. I also feel that since I?m not a great cook, I?d rather just once a week pay someone at a restaurant who is really good at it [laughs].

Do you run competitively?
It?s just for my own personal sense of accomplishment. I?ve never been in a race but am definitely working on getting my times to a really good spot.

Chefs really like your music. Have you heard that before?
I haven?t heard that but I also don?t know any chefs [laughs]. I?ve definitely never heard it in any of the restaurants that I go around town.

You have a lot of food imagery in your song titles. Does food play a role in the creative process?
It?s not necessarily that, but I always like the song titles to be a major part of what the whole concept and art of it is. I like to create titles that you can?t really place ? but when you think about them and combine what I?m saying ? it creates its own new thing. I?ve always liked adding some kind of taste into my titles because if you can taste the title, you just think of it in a different way.

Cops: Suspect in Ark. girl's death a family friend

BENTONVILLE, Ark. (AP) ? Officials say the man arrested as a suspect in the killing of a 6-year-old Arkansas girl was a family friend.

Bentonville Police Chief Jon Simpson on Tuesday described 28-year-old Zachary Holly as "an acquaintance."

Simpson told The Associated Press that Holly and his wife lived next door to where Jersey Bridgeman was staying.

Jersey was reported missing the morning of Nov. 20. Minutes after a search began, her body was discovered in an abandoned house two doors from her home. A high-profile child abuse case last year sent Jersey's father and stepmother to prison.

Holly is charged with capital murder, kidnapping and residential burglary.

Simpson said Holly and his wife do not have children, but Holly's wife has a child who is "pretty much the same age as our victim."

Egypt court hits back at president over accusations

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egypt's Supreme Constitutional Court accused President Mohamed Mursi on Wednesday of taking part in a campaign against the court, heightening tensions between the Islamist leader and parts of the judiciary.

"The really sad thing that has pained the members of this court is when the president of the republic joined, in a painful surprise, the campaign of continuous attack on the constitutional court," said the court's spokesman, Maher Samy.

He told reporters that Mursi had accused the court in a speech on Friday of leaking verdicts before a formal announcement. The court issued a ruling this year declaring the Islamist-led parliament void, leading to its dissolution.

Q. Daughter Is Left Out of the Gift Exchange: I was an unmarried teenager when I gave birth to my now 8-year-old daughter Mandy. I am now engaged to Peter, a wonderful man who loves me and adores Mandy. The issue is Peter's parents. This don't care for Mandy, and they don't think much of me because I was in a position to give birth as an unwed teenager. They have lectured me a few times about premarital sex and the like. Christmas is coming up, and my future mother-in-law has informed me that she and her husband will not be buying presents for Mandy, and neither will Peter's siblings. Mandy's not entitled to presents, but since Peter's family does a big Christmas get-together, Mandy will see a bunch of kids get presents while she does not. It's hard to explain something like this to a kid. Peter's pretty upset with his family, but they're still his family, and ditching them would be incredibly painful for him, obviously. Do you have any advice?

A: Peter may be a wonderful man, but I hope one of his good qualities is that he is capable of standing up to his parents on behalf of his future wife and stepchild. There are still a few weeks left before Christmas, so I Peter needs to have a sit-down with his parents informing him that you and your daughter are going to be a part of the family and if his parents want all of you to be in their lives?and that includes the grandchildren to come?they need to stop making invidious comparisons among the grandchildren. Since Mandy is a new arrival it would be fine if they simply get her one thoughtful gift, but to deliberately leave her on the sidelines is unconscionable. If they back down, then you and Peter should each buy her a gift for under the tree so she doesn't feel left out. An 8-year-old is also old enough to be told that joining a new family can be a awkward and uncomfortable but that you and Peter will be looking out for her. If you go and Peter's family behaves dreadfully, you and he should have a signal that enough is enough and make an early exit from the nonfestivities.

Q. Bridezilla Buddy: My best friend from childhood is getting married in six months, and I am the matron of honor. I have been struggling with infertility, and was planning on trying in vitro in the spring. Well, to my surprise, I am unexpectedly pregnant. Obviously, my husband and I are thrilled. My family is thrilled. My friend is absolutely furious. She is angry that I will ?spoil? her wedding pictures by being about eight months pregnant, and she is worried that I won't fit into any dress that matches her plan. She is accusing me of intentionally ruining her big day. I want to simply tell her to get lost, but her family is close to mine, there is a lot of history there, and I worry about the repercussions between our families if I was to cut her out of my life. Frankly, I wish she would just ?fire? me as MoH, and make things easier. I have tried to explain to her, I didn't plan on this pregnancy, as I really thought I would never get pregnant on my own, and I had hoped she would be happy for me, as she knew everything we were going through. She just doesn't get it though, and continues to play the victim here. I could *almost* ignore her selfishness here, except she has started making comments along the lines of, ?Well, you may not even be pregnant when the wedding comes. With all your fertility issues, you may just miscarry, so no big deal.? I almost lost my mind at that point. I am beyond stressed about her and this wedding after all of this. Is it too late for me to just say no?

A: Your best friend hopes you miscarry so that you can properly devote your energies to her perfect day and not to your impending motherhood. What more do you need to know? It doesn't matter that the two families are close, someone has to clue this bride into the fact that she's become a gargoyle. You inform her right away that because of your pregnancy you will not be able to attend her wedding, period. No excuse making for your thoughtless reproduction plans, no snide comments that you're thinking the wedding might not come off because you hope the groom realizes he's about to hitch himself to a lunatic.

Q. Battling Cancer, Who Should Watch the Kids?: I will soon begin chemotherapy to battle cancer. My husband and I have three children under 6, so we'll need child care help over the coming months. My parents, who live 30 minutes away, would love to watch our kids when I am too sick to or when my husband needs to work. I would prefer this arrangement. My husband thinks his ex-wife Madeline should watch our kids, since she lives 10 minutes away. He and Madeline have two teenagers together, so spending time with Madeline would mean receiving additional support from their older brothers. I enjoy a fabulous relationship with Madeline, and she is a fantastic mom. But I still want my parents to be our children's primary baby sitters while I'm undergoing chemo. Part of me selfishly worries that my kids will begin to prefer Madeline when my hair falls out and I'm kind of scary because of the drugs I will be taking. I also feel more comfortable with my parents for reasons I can't explain; I feel like I won't be as worried about being sick or having rough days in front of them. I could use some outside perspective on this.

A: I'm so sorry you are going through this and I wish you a swift and complete recovery. You are blessed with several people who can step in to help with the kids, run errands, cook meals, and otherwise keep life as normal as possible. However, not one of these people will replace you in your children's hearts, no matter how upsetting it is to see you ill. Please do your best to prepare your children in an age-appropriate way for what's ahead. (Readers, any book suggestions or advice on this?) You do not have to choose between caregivers, and your husband should be sensitive to your desires. But if your treatment is a long haul it sounds as if it would be good to organize shifts of your parents and Madeline. Keeping your kids active and happy and surrounded by the many loving people in their lives will be the best medicine for all of you.

Q. Haunted By My Mistake: Last year my friend's girlfriend disappeared with their two young children. He was desperate to find them, but he did not trust the police so he did not involve them. I saw his girlfriend a few weeks later when I went to visit my sister a few hours away from where my friend and I lived. She seemed to be working at a hair salon. I called my friend and told him I'd seen her and where. My friend tracked his girlfriend down, followed her home, and killed her and one of their kids before taking his own life. I had no idea his girlfriend fled because he'd been abusing her; nothing ever indicated to me that he was controlling or violent. Even so, I am haunted by my mistake. I have fallen apart over the past year. I cannot hold down a job or maintain relationships. Two innocent people are dead because of me, and a child will grow up an orphan because of me. No one knows my involvement in the case. I fear a counselor would push me to confess to the victim's families. Maybe that is what I deserve: to be hated by them. I do not know what to do with myself.

A: I can understand your agony. While it is too late for this tragedy, it's good for anyone concerned about a friend or family member's domestic crisis that if someone does not want to police involved when that is the obvious place to turn, alarm bells should ring. You need to start taking steps to get on with your life. Naturally, you are awash with guilt, but your own ruination will do no one any good. You know you acted in all innocence?there are plenty of cases in which one parent absconds with the children leaving a decent parent bereft. You obviously would never have tipped off your friend had you known he was a maniac. First, I think you should have a consultation with a criminal defense lawyer. I'm not saying you are criminally liable, but you need to get these potential issues resolved. Then you do need to talk to a counselor. You must figure out a way to deal with your guilt and rebuild a productive life. This event will always be a scar across your psyche, but being destroyed yourself only makes one more person a victim of that monster.

Rome Launches Wolf Logo To Brand Souvenirs

Rome Launches Wolf Logo To Brand Souvenirs

words by Carol King

New York City has ?The Big Apple? and now Rome has its official she-wolf thanks to an initiative by the city?s mayor, Gianni Alemanno.

In line with other brand-merchandising initiatives taken by major cities across the world, Rome has launched an official logo that will appear on souvenirs. The logo shows a sketch of a she-wolf standing on a capital above with the word ?Roma?. The design used won a competition to create a logo for the city that attracted more than 1,000 entries,

The she-wolf symbol has symbolised Rome since ancient times. It refers to the famous legend regarding the city?s origins, in which a she-wolf suckled the infant twins Romulus and Remus. Romulus went on to found the city on the Palatine Hill. The use of the capital in the logo is a reference to Rome?s capital-city status and to the topmost part of an architectural column as seen in the city?s many ancient ruins.

The symbol will appear on a range of products, from mugs to T-shirts, and the local council says 70% of the items bearing the logo will be made in Italy. In an effort to stave off counterfeit products, official souvenirs will bear a hologram for authentication purposes. As the master licensee of the brand, the council hopes to raise ?3.5 million from royalties on sales over the next five years for zero outlay.

The branded items come in two lines. The Top Line comprises products costing from ?29 to ?550, including T-shirts and jackets. The Tourist Line has items priced from ?3 to ?60, including badges, mouse mats and key rings. Branded editorial products such as calendars, maps and DVDs will also be available.

The first Tourist Line products will be available from November in outlets next to monuments, museums and tourist spots in Rome, as well as newsstands, and bookshops. Top Line items will be on sale from mid-January at 50 selected stores. The council is launching a website to sell the souvenirs online.
