BELGRADE -- According to EU officials, the holding of the gay Pride Parade in Belgrade could help Serbia on its EU pathway.

They stress, however, that the country?s EU accession process will not be halted if the parade is not held.

Serbian Prime Minister Ivica Da?i? said earlier that the government would soon, based on security and risk assessments, decide whether Pride Parade would be held or not.

Organizers, who say they are ready and that the parade will not be cancelled, have received support from Serbian Health Minister Slavica ?uki?-Dejanovi?. She noted that the Pride Parade ?would not hurt Serbia?s reputation?.

?Pride Parade is not a condition for getting a date (for the beginning of the EU accession talks). It is not. But I think that it is clear to everyone that mature European societies, the most developed ones, will see it as the right message from Serbia,? European Parliament Rapporteur for Serbia Jelko Kacin has said.

He stressed that he had already booked a plane ticket to Belgrade for October 6, adding he believed he ?will have an opportunity to take part in the walk?.

MEP Eduard Kukan said that the holding of the Pride Parade ?is not some obstacle? on Serbia?s EU pathway but that the fact that it was organized, banned or cancelled ?is taken into account when we discuss human and minority rights?.

?Of course, the organization of the parade could help you,? Kukan noted.

The participants of the parade will gather at 10:00 CET in Manje? Park in downtown Belgrade on October 6 and the walk will begin at 11:00, organizers say.

The Dveri Movement has already announced it would organize a protest walk on October 6 and urged the authorities several times to ban the gay parade.

MIXED MARTIAL ARTS & GRAPPLING Three of the most popular Combat Sports throughout GB are Sombo, MMA and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu BJJ yet out of the three there is only one of them that has a governing body, that is recognised by UKSport and has an International Body recognised by Sport Accord and that is the British Sombo Federation. This I believe will changing in the very near future as the very well respected F.I.L.A has included the two on their list of Wrestling Sports and they call it Amateur MMA and Grappling. F.I.L.A have been responsible for Free Style and Greco Roman since the Olympics began so they are the obvious choice for running these sports. It is important that we put some legitimisation into MMA as there are so many unqualified, inexperience clubs teaching these Combat Skills. I recently heard of a karate Club who numbers had been dwindling changing there name to an MMA club and their membership quadrupled, when they were questioned they said they had mixed several Karate Styles together hence MMA Mixed Martial Arts. Although those in the know realise that is not what MMA is, but the Public do not know. I have strong doubts that you would be able to register MMA Mixed Martial Arts as a ?Service Mark? because of the nature of the name Mixed Martial Arts can mean anything it is not specific. Maybe MMA could have been registered but now because it has been widely used I doubt it. When I registered ?CombatSombo? a Grappling Self Defence System in 1988 as a service mark no one had used a combination on the name in any other form, since then the International body has come with a very successful Full Contact Jacket Strike and Grapple called Combat Sambo. In Some countries many use the same words for a self-defence system. The main advantage of registering COMBATSOMBO is I have total control of the name in this country and only Grades certificates with my signature or my authorisation can justify you saying you do COMBATSOMBO. Sadly at the time I did not get it registered World Wide but because everyone knows that CombatSombo is my style that they can still check to see if the Coach is registered with me. A Couple of years ago I was invited along with others to a meeting with the British Wrestling Association at the Wrestling Academy in Salford to discuss MMA and they came up with two very useful and unique names. For MMA Grappling and Submission Wrestling with or with out Jackets they would use the name FILA Grappling for MMA strike and grapple they would use the words FILA Combat. These two name are easily defined and can be easily regulated, I believe this is the way forward, I for one have no objections affiliating to the BWA in fact our Warriors Grappling Academy is a member Those who enjoy true MMA need to break away from the name because the name is slowing become ridiculed Amateur Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is a full contact combat sport that incorporates striking (both standing and on the ground) and wrestling/grappling techniques. As governed by FILA, it is practiced within a safe and regulated environment, which relies on a fair and objective scoring system and competition procedures similar to those in force in Olympic wrestling. Despite its tremendous popularity, MMA is facing various legitimacy issues due to the lack of sanctioning by the national sports authorities and the lack of universal rules that would protect the athletes' physical and psychological integrity. FILA considers that?the implementation of an amateur variant that could guarantee a safe training environment and a competition systems complying with the Olympic standards has become an urgent necessity for all athletes wishing to engage in a professional career. Through the mandatory use of protection gear and limited impact rules (especially regarding ground and pound), FILA intends to offer a safe and educational sport that can satisfy athletes with both recreational or professional goals.?
With its combination of stand up and ground techniques, amateur MMA represents a great form of self-defense, which is particularly recommended for the training of police, security, and military forces. Amateur MMA is practiced with board shorts and an optional rashguard along with approved protection gear that includes head gear, shin protectors, and gloves that allow grabbing and holding the opponent for a comfortable application of grappling techniques.
Amateur MMA counts 7 weight categories for men and 5 weight categories for women. No absolute category is considered in order to avoid potentially harmful situations. ? ??????? Men: 60-65-70-75-80-90-110kg? ??????? Women: 50-55-60-65-75kg ? Licence and insurance: The FILA licence is mandatory for all international amateur MMA competitions with more than two participating countries. Every international competition shall be anounced to FILA and added to its official calendar. The FILA insurance will only apply to competitions which appear in its calendar. The FILA licence allows its holder to take part in all wrestling styles ruled by FILA. Grappling is a non-striking hybrid sport formed of wrestling, jiu jitsu, sambo, and many other submission fighting styles which consists in applying submission holds and choking techniques in order to make the opponent abandon the fight. Grappling plays an important role in the practice of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and is considered an effective form of self-defense.
When including grappling into its field of activities, FILA had the vision to unite the grappling community under standard international rules and offer a generic discipline that would go beyond the specificities of each submission fighting discipline. Straight forward and easy to understand rules were thus created to facilitate the participation of athletes coming from different fighting backgrounds in international competitions.
The FILA grappling regulations are based on a progressive point system that encourages submissions over technical points. Points are awarded for takedowns and dominant control positions according to the following progression: side mount > full mount > back mount. Once having reached a position and secured it for 3 seconds, additional points can only be scored if a higher position is achieved. The progression is reset if the opponent manages to bring the fight back to neutral (be it standing or on the ground) or to score a dominant control position in his/her turn.
Since submission fighting is traditionally practiced with and without kimono (Gi), FILA has decided to implement both trends in order to cover the full spectrum of techniques associated to each particular style. If some athletes prefer one style over the other, most of them enjoy practicing and competing in both. Therefore, the FILA tournaments generally take place in Gi and No-Gi divisions to enable all submission fighters to compete to their highest ability no matter what their fighting background might be.
In order to unify the rules and participation in Grappling, Pankration, and Combat Grappling competitions, FILA has adopted common weight categories for all three styles. The lighter categories have a smaller increase in weight due to the the bigger effect weight differences have on lighter athletes' performances. An absolute category open to competitors of all weight classes has also been added to allow heavier athletes to compete and to demonstrate that grappling techniques can sometimes overcome weight and strength, creating an exciting and spectator-friendly addition to the sport. ??????? "The root needs an extra force to push through these barriers, and the mathematical model tells us how large of a helix the root needs to grow to do just that. Roughly, the stiffer the barrier, the larger the helix."

BofA to pay $2.43 billion to settle shareholder lawsuit

NEW YORK/CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Reuters) - Bank of America Corp agreed on Friday to pay $2.43 billion to settle a shareholder lawsuit over its 2008 buyout of Merrill Lynch in one of the largest-ever settlements of a securities fraud class action.

The accord is by far the biggest settlement of an investor class action arising from the 2008 financial crisis. Bank of America denied allegations it misled shareholders ahead of the Merrill deal, causing them huge losses, but said it agreed to settle to put the case behind it.

The bank expects to incur total litigation expenses of about $1.6 billion in the third quarter ending September 30. It said that expense and a U.K. tax charge would hit quarterly results by about 28 cents per share and likely trigger a loss for the period.

Analysts had expected Bank of America to report earnings of 14 cents per share when it releases results on October 17, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

The settlement, which requires court approval, would resolve a case set for an October 22 trial in U.S. District Court in Manhattan. The bank still has other financial crisis-era legal problems outstanding - many involving its 2008 purchase of mortgage lender Countrywide Financial.

The settlement on Friday indicates it may cost more than expected for the bank to resolve issues lingering from the Merrill and Countrywide deals, said Gary Townsend, chief executive of Hill-Townsend Capital in Maryland.

While former Bank of America Chief Executive Kenneth Lewis' decision to buy Merrill in 2008 - at the peak of the financial crisis - helped the U.S. banking system, it has proven costly to shareholders, Townsend said.

Bank of America shares have slid more than two-thirds since the Merrill deal was announced in September 2008.

"It's good to get it behind you," Townsend said. "It's good to get a bad tooth removed. But the question is, 'How expensive was Ken's mistake back in 2008?'"

Lewis had long coveted Merrill's "Thundering Herd" of retail brokers, but in late 2008 he attempted to get out of the deal when Merrill's losses ballooned and threatened the capital of the combined company.

In the face of pressure from then-Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, Lewis moved forward with the acquisition in January 2009, accepting a $20 billion government bailout to shore up the bank's balance sheet.

Bank of America has since repaid the money. Lewis retired at the end of 2009 and was replaced by Brian Moynihan, who remains CEO.

The Merrill deal was valued at $50 billion when it was announced, but the bank ended up paying $29.1 billion as Bank of America's shares fell.

In a research note on Friday, banking analyst David Trone of JMP Securities said the settlement was "far larger than we expected given the weak merits of such suits and historical precedence."

Prior to this accord, the largest crisis-era investor class action settlement involved allegations Wachovia, now part of Wells Fargo & Co, misled investors about the quality of loans sold before the financial downturn, according to NERA Economic Consulting.

Wells Fargo agreed last year to pay $590 million to resolve that lawsuit, on top of $37 million that auditor KPMG LLP agreed to pay, bringing the total recovery for the investors to $627 million.

Overall, the largest securities fraud settlements in U.S. history include the $7.2 billion agreement with investors stemming from the collapse of Enron; the $6.2 billion WorldCom settlement; and the $3.2 billion agreement over the accounting scandal at Tyco International, according to Stanford Law School's Securities Class Action Clearinghouse.

The Bank of America lawsuit, filed in 2009, contended the bank and its officers made false or misleading statements about the financial health of the bank and Merrill Lynch before the acquisition, causing the bank's stock price to tumble when the facts were revealed.

Under the settlement, the bank will make changes to its corporate governance through January 1, 2015. The bank had agreed to some of the changes as part of a February 2010 settlement with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, including provisions on the independence of its board compensation committee and an annual shareholder vote on executive pay.

Lead plaintiffs in the lawsuit included the State Teachers Retirement System of Ohio, the Ohio Public Employees Retirement System and the Teacher Retirement System of Texas.

"Not only did we accomplish an excellent financial recovery, but other companies will look at the result here and think twice about not fully disclosing all necessary information to their shareholders," Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine said in a statement.

The settlement was reached after discussions led by a mediator, former federal judge Layn Phillips, lawyers for the plaintiffs said.

A hearing before Judge Castel has been scheduled to discuss the agreement at 3:30 p.m. EDT (1930 GMT) Friday, according to a courtroom deputy in Castel's chambers.

Bank of America shares slipped 8 cents to $8.89 on the New York Stock Exchange.

I'd actually say that $480 r/t on SAV-LAX is actually not that bad, considering the actual cost of flying. $480 r/t /less taxes is roughly $440 to DL, which on roughly a 4000 mile round trip is around a 11-12 cent CASM. DL is barely breaking even, if at all on this fare. They certainly are not ripping anyone off on that fare, its pretty close to the cost of flying that route. SAV-LAX also has numerous competition as all the other airlines can get you there on connecting service over their respective hubs. Huge Earthquake Triggered Other Quakes Worldwide

On April 11, a massive magnitude 8.6 earthquake shook the floor of the Indian Ocean off Sumatra. It wasn't just unusual because of its size ? the 10th largest quake in the last century ? it also set off a series of quakes around the world for up to six days afterward, according to a study published today (Sept. 26) in the journal Nature.

"Until now, we seismologists have always said, 'Don't worry about distant earthquakes triggering local quakes,'" said Roland Burgmann, an earth and planetary scientist at UC Berkeley, in a statement. "This study now says that, while it is very rare ? it may only happen every few decades ? it is a real possibility if the right kind of earthquake happens."

The study found that some quakes were triggered within a few hours, while in other places the seismic waves from the Sumatran quake primed temblors to happen for up to six days later. ?

The findings should remind those living in seismically active areas that the risk from a large earthquake could persist, even on the opposite side of the globe, for more than a few hours, the study scientists said.

Another study also published today suggests that the quake marks the birth of a new tectonic plate beneath the Indian Ocean.

The temblor was caused by plates slipping past each other, in what's called a strike-slip earthquake. (California's San Andrea fault is perhaps the most famous example of a strike-slip fault.)

"This was one of the weirdest earthquakes we have ever seen," Burgmann said in the statement. "It was like the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, a strike-slip event, but it was huge ? 15 times more energetic."

The Sumatran earthquake led to a 7.0 quake in Baja California and quakes in Indonesia and Japan, but none of these caused much damage. Worldwide, the seismologists found five times the expected number of quakes during the six days following April 11.

One possible mechanism for the delayed action is that the East Indian Ocean quake triggered a cascade of undetectable micro-quakes on certain faults that led to larger ruptures later on, according to a UC Berkeley release on the study.

Researchers looked at other recent large earthquakes and found that there was only a small increase in the number of earthquakes immediately afterward. That could be due to the unique nature of the Sumatran quake, which generated waves that traveled just under the Earth's surface and were energetic enough to affect distant fault zones.
