Location: Urbana-Champaign Campus

Position: The Crop Sciences Department seeks a 100% full time, 12-month academic, non-tenure track position who serves a key administrative role.

Responsibilities: The Department of Crop Sciences is seeking candidates for an Assistant Head, Business & Strategic Planning position which will provide strategic leadership and planning regarding the financial analysis of and human resource functions for the Department. In the department head's absence, represent the department regarding strategic planning and financial matters. This position reports directly to the Department Head. Coordinate all financial, human resource and administrative operations in the department and ensure that relevant laws and regulations are applied. Manage and supervise the Department's business functions (including office staff), maintaining and enhancing the strong service orientation of the office. Provide counsel to department head and faculty in handling personnel issues, advise Head and faculty on recruitment of academic and civil service staff (including OEOA/AA policies), as well as provide oversight of payroll and appointment processing. Serve as the departmental contact with various College and Campus Offices and Divisions including facilities management, space utilization and other administrative functions. Implement Departmental policies for the maintenance and management of accounts, monitor expenditures, budget development and preparation of various types of management information. Prepare reports and analyses relating to budgets, grants and contracts, and human resources. Responsible for fiscal management and control of all Department funds including state and federal appropriations, grants, contracts, gifts, indirect cost recovery, and self-supporting funds. Serve as the primary resource for budget preparation, administrative requirements and approvals for grant proposals. Assist faculty in identifying funding opportunities, preparation of grants and contracts, and financial planning and forecasting. Function as liaison with OSPRA. Coordinate and prepare responses for Post-Award information and compliance requests.

Qualifications: Candidates must have a baccalaureate degree in a relevant discipline with at least three years management and supervisory experience involving business, fiscal, personnel, and organizational responsibilities. An M.B.A., M.P.A or relevant advanced degree is preferred. Demonstrated evidence of strong oral and written communication and interpersonal skills is required. Experience with University of Illinois business and accounting systems is preferred. Must have the ability to skillfully and concurrently address multiple interpersonal and fiscal issues in a complex entrepreneurial academic unit with a high-volume, time-sensitive workload.
