BIDDEFORD, Maine -

The NCAA has reprimanded the University of New England for failing to monitor its financial aid process for athletes.

Violations involved a university diversity scholarship in which athletes received larger dollar amounts in comparison to the student body, the NCAA's website said. In the 2008-2009 academic year, athletes made up 34 percent of diversity scholarship funds but got 43 percent of the funds.

"The university failed to monitor the admissions personnel involved in the determination of financial aid awards by failing to educate them regarding NCAA financial aid rules," the NCAA said.

Penalties for the violation also include two years' probation. UNE had self-imposed actions, including the suspension and reassignment of the athletic director. Six students who play hockey and have diversity scholarships can continue to play with less financial aid or receive the same amount and no longer play, the NCAA sai

"The NCAA understood that mistakes were inadvertent and unintentional. As soon as we realized our error, we took immediate action, cooperated fully with the NCAA and as a result, will not face any additional penalties for which we are grateful," said Thomas White, vice president for communications for the?
