Motorola makes updating the Moto X camera easy, moves app to Google Play
In a continuing trend of moving what traditionally would be system apps out of the operating system, Motorola has just plopped the camera application for the Moto X into the Google Play Store.
Listed as new in this release are:
- Brightened camera viewfinder so it's easier to see
- Enabled quick capture for more enterprise IT policies
- Bug fixes
And, more important, it means you won't need a system update to improve the Moto X camera — which has been the most disappointing part of this phone for us.
This isn't the first time we've seen this happen, of course. The Touchless Control feature for the Moto X (and new Verizon Droids) is in Google Play, having just been updated with a new "Find my phone" feature. Motorola's Droid Zap feature also is in Google Play.

Josh Barnett to undergo random WADA drug testing paid for by UFC
Former UFC heavyweight champion Josh Barnett will undergo random World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) certified drug testing in the lead-up to his UFC 168 bout against Travis Browne, along with continued random testing following the event to satisfy new conditions of his licensure.
The Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) issued the order at a Thursday meeting in Las Vegas, effectively making Barnett the first professional mixed martial artist to require random, WADA-certified drug testing.
Barnett failed post-fight drug tests in 2001 and 2002, the latter of which led UFC officials to strip Barnett of his title, along with a failed pre-fight test in 2009 which led to the cancellation of his Affliction bout against Fedor Emelianenko.
Joined at the meeting by his two attorneys, the 35-year-old Barnett took full responsibility for his past actions, adding that regardless of his prior issues, he has no plans to apply for a therapeutic use exemption for testosterone replacement therapy. The heavyweight then agreed to the conditions laid out by NSAC officials.
Barnett is expected to undergo random, weekly WADA-certified testing until UFC 168, which takes place December 28 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, NV. After which, Barnett is to undergo random testing until December 31, 2014, regardless of whether he fights in the state of Nevada. NSAC officials unanimously approved the motion.
UFC vice president of regulatory affairs Marc Ratner, who joined Barnett at the meeting, agree on the UFC's behalf to pick up the costs of the additional testing, which is expected to total upwards of $20,000.
"Thank you to the NSAC for granting my license and allowing me to make history by being the first MMA athlete to do random, year round testing," Barnett tweeted afterward. "Also thank you to the UFC, Dana White and all your support in this.
"I can imagine that today may set the precedent from here on and random testing may become the standard for the sport of MMA."
In addition, UFC 167 fighters Josh Koscheck and Chael Sonnen received approval by the NSAC for their licenses to compete, as is standard policy for any fighter over the age of 35.

Justin Bieber Shows Support for Troubled Chris Brown
Going to bat for his buddy, Justin Bieber grabbed some spray paint and plastered a message on Chris Brown's behalf while out in Bogota, Columbia on Wednesday evening (October 30).
The “One Less Lonely Girl” singer wrote “Free Breezy” on a graffiti wall, referring to the legal woes plaguing Mr. Brown after his assault charges earlier this month.
Chris was arrested and charged with misdemeanor assault after he got into a fight in Washington DC, and upon his release he checked into rehab for anger issues.
Of course, Justin also took the opportunity to spray paint a marijuana leaf as well as a tribute to Pac, his deceased hamster.

49ers linebacker Aldon Smith activated
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — All-Pro 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith was activated to the 53-man roster from the non-football injury list Thursday, two days after he turned himself in to Santa Clara County authorities as he faces weapons charges.
One of San Francisco's dynamic pass rushers appears ready to return.
Smith had been undergoing rehab at an in-patient facility for substance abuse since late September and missed five games. With San Francisco (6-2) on its bye this week, Smith could resume practicing and working out on his own, then formally practice next week ahead of a Nov. 10 home game against the Carolina Panthers.
Smith was charged Oct. 9 with three felony counts of illegal possession of an assault weapon, stemming from a party at his home in June 2012.
49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said on his weekly radio show with 95.7 The Game that Smith met with 49ers officials Wednesday at team headquarters. General manager Trent Baalke said last week in London that Smith would have to show "progress" to play again this year.
Smith will be due in court twice — Nov. 12 and Nov. 19 — to face DUI and weapons charges.
The 24-year-old Smith had been on what the team called an indefinite leave of absence from the NFC champion Niners. Smith's agent didn't immediately return requests for comment Thursday.
Harbaugh traded text messages with Smith when he was gone, and the coach said on the radio "he's made quite a bit of progress."
While Smith is likely to face a suspension from the NFL, the league typically waits until all legal issues are resolved before handing down its own discipline.
Also in September, Smith and former teammate Delanie Walker were named in a lawsuit filed in Santa Clara County Superior Court by a Northern California man who said he was shot at a party at Smith's house on June 29, 2012.
The players charged a $10 admission and $5 per drink, the lawsuit said. Smith and now-Titans tight end Walker, 29, were allegedly intoxicated on Smith's balcony when they fired gunshots in the air while trying to end the party, the lawsuit said.
Before the 2012 home opener last September, Smith was the passenger in a car during an accident in Santa Clara County in which the driver swerved to avoid hitting a deer. Smith sustained a cut beneath his right eyebrow. He apologized and insisted he would change his ways.
Smith, selected seventh overall in the 2011 draft out of Missouri, had previously been arrested on suspicion of DUI in January 2012 in Miami shortly after the 49ers lost in the NFC championship game.
There was no NFL minimum for the number of games he had to miss while on the non-football injury list. The 49ers continued to pay Smith his weekly salary of more than $98,000 while he was away.
Smith played in a 27-7 home loss to the Colts on Sept. 22 and had five tackles just two days after he was arrested and jailed on suspicion of DUI and marijuana possession. Smith apologized for his behavior after the game then later announced he would leave for treatment.
Smith set a franchise record with 19 1/2 sacks last season.

Microsoft needs your help to nail the Windows 8.1 update 0xc1900101 Blue Screens
October 31, 2013
If you've been having trouble upgrading from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1, and are encountering Blue Screens marked 0xc1900101 - 0x40017 or 0xC1900101-0x20017, 0xC1900101-0x40019 or 0xc1900101 - 0x30018, there may be a fix for your problems. But if none of the remedies offered here get you upgraded, please head to the Microsoft Answers forum and post details about your configuration. Because after two weeks of trying, Microsoft still hasn't figured out what's causing the problem, and your input may help.
On Oct. 18 I wrote about the show-stopper bug for many people upgrading from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1. Martin Dixon posted the original description on the Microsoft Answers forum, shortly after the Windows 8.1 upgrade rolled out:
I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:
"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1
Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.
0xC1900101 - 0x40017"
There is no explanation as to why the update couldn't be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?
To date, almost 400 posts on that thread -- plus hundreds more on several additional, similar threads -- have led to a small handful of customer-discovered solutions, but no definitive workaround that everyone can apply.
Here are the approaches that seem to work for some people:
- If you have SteelSeries peripherals, running the SteelSeries Engine driver, uninstall it before re-trying the upgrade.
- If you have an Asus N53 dual-band PCI-e wireless adapter, pull it. If necessary, find another way to download the upgrade.

I'm Young, Middle Class & Being Punished Again
The Obama administration came out with a report Monday arguing that 1 million single adults between the ages of 18 and 35 will be eligible for an Obamacare insurance plan costing less than $50 a month.
That’s news to me.
I’m a healthy 34-year-old with a taxable income hovering right around the Obamacare subsidy level who, for the last several years, has purchased a relatively inexpensive catastrophic health insurance plan from Blue Shield. I get to see the doctor four times a year for a $30 co-pay, and I won’t have to spend the rest of my life working off the debt if I get hit by a bus.
