Video: Florida remains up-for-grabs

>>> the republican presidential candidates have been bashing president obama 's address while they're on the road in florida today . larry kudlow interviewed mitt romney for his show tonight. romney told him that many obama's millionaire's tax is aimed directly at him. while newt gingrich told the "today" show he liked obama's rhetoric, but that was it.

>> well, it's designed to commit me if i'm the nominee, if i happen to be not the nominee, he's trying to divide america and try and say that republicans are all about the rich people . look, republicans are about fighting to help middle class americans get better jobs.

>> i find the gap between president obama 's words and his deeds to be sort of astounding. you know, he ran on bringing us together. he ran on yes, we can. yet, last night he seemed to be setting up an entire year of divisiveness.

>> meanwhile, some new poll numbers out today showed newt gingrich taking the lead in the sunshine state . the quinnipiac poll talked to voters before and after the south carolina primary , before the primary, romney was polling at about 37%, gingrich in second at 26%. but after the south carolina primary , take a look at this now. gingrich soars to 40%. but the race cos still be anyone's. 3% say they still might change their minds. want to bring in the "news nation" political panel. michael smerconish is a radio talk show host, also an msnbc contributor as well, a.b. stoddard, columnist for the hill. good afternoon to both of you.

>> hi, craig .

>> michael , let's start with you. newt gingrich wiping out a 12-point lead by mitt romney in florida . he did the same thing in south carolina . his momentum now giving him more momentum. how likely at this point that romney loses florida , and what will that mean for the race going forward?

>> i think this would be the contest that would wipe the slate clean because up till now, folks have been saying romney is still the proverbial front-runner but if he should lose florida , a far more diverse state than was south carolina in terms of those who come out and comprise the primary electorate, this would be a very significant setback. you know, craig , here's the state of the union address last night. i'm convinced mitt romney made the decision to release his tax returns yesterday, thinking he would get buried in all the coverage of the state of the union . and instead, it seems to have played directly into the hand of the president who was prepared already to talk about income disparity and here now is the romney tax return , which just furthered the narrative the white house is trying to create of him.

>> a.b., it did sound at times last night that the president was speaking as if mitt romney was going to be 9 nominee. a lot of the themes highlighted last night were the themes that would lend themselves to mitt romney .

>> they are. and michael 's right that the release of the tax returns showing that a man with no job is earning almost $60,000 a day in income off his investments from years gone by is really quite a stark example with most americans. but i think that president obama is going to run on the same themes no matter who is the nominee. he's decided he's not going to run on the situation with the economy which he says is better but he's not going to run on 8% unemployment. he's not going to run on health care reform law. he's going to run on the fact that things could be worse and the fact that there are these differences between republican economic positions which he says destroy the middle class and his proposal to defend the middle class , which he says you know, is having this make or break moment. it doesn't matter. even if newt gingrich becomes the republican nominee, you'll hear the same thing from president obama this summer and fall.

>> i want to come back to the state of the union in a moment. i want to make sure we get to what happened in florida today . newt gingrich spending part of the morning on a univision candidate forum in miami trying to court hispanic voters. a huge continuigency in the sunshine state . take a listen to what he said this morning. i want to talk about it on the other side.

>> you said that spanish is the language of the living -- of living in a ghetto.

>> it wasn't about spanish. i said about all languages. i am for english as a communionfying language. the fact is you will have a higher income, have greater job opportunities, and have a likelihood of your family having a better future if you're conversant in english.

>> michael , is there a republican candidate that has an advantage over the other with those crucial little important hispanic voters in florida ?

>> well, really interesting, craig , because you know, newt gingrich in commenting about the path towards citizenship as he saw it for the 11 million here already illegally, alienated some elements of thatting and glow base within the gop. the message he offered a few weeks agoing that drew criticism should be one that would earn him fans among hispanics in florida in particular. whether that turns out to be the case, we're about to find out.

>> one of the things that struck me going back to the state of the union last night, a.b., one of the things that struck me was it appeared as if the president was racing for the middle. it looked like and sounded like triangulation all over again. he spent time last night talking about cyberwarfare, talked about fighting mercury poisoning and spent a fair amount of time talking about personal responsibility, as well, themes that you generally don't hear a lot of left leaning politicians talk about a great deal. a.b., is the president going to be able to make that pivot successfully to go from fiery liberal populist to the centrist in the.

>> i think it's going to be tough. last night except for his discussion of economic disparity and tax fairness, i think he was largely a speech to please the base and consolidate the base. in the months to come when there is a general election that has begun in ernest and this is a republican nominee, he's going to bepy videotaping back perhaps on energy and other issues. right now he's talking about expiring the bush tax cuts for the wealthy and fighting for the middle class . republicans are not in agreement with those policies right now.

>> a.b., michael , always a pleasure. thank you both.

Lopez bows out of Venezuela presidential race (AP)

CARACAS, Venezuela ? Opposition politician Leopoldo Lopez bowed out of Venezuela's presidential race on Tuesday, saying he will support front-runner Henrique Capriles Radonski.

The announcement gives a significant boost to Capriles, who has a commanding lead in the polls ahead of the Feb. 12 opposition primary, which will choose a single challenger to face President Hugo Chavez in the Oct. 7 presidential election.

"You will be the next president," Lopez said at a news conference with Capriles. The two embraced and raised their arms before a cheering crowd. "In me, he will have a great ally," Lopez added.

Lopez, a former Caracas district mayor, has been trailing in recent polls. He said that with his departure, "unity is strengthened" within the opposition.

Capriles, an athletic 39-year-old, has captured support among Venezuelans by presenting himself as a capable manager and pledging to solve problems such as rampant crime, unemployment and 27-percent inflation.

Capriles has tended to avoid direct verbal confrontations with Chavez and has described his politics as center-left. He likens his approach to that of former Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who promoted pro-business policies while funding expansive social programs that have made him popular among the poor.

Capriles is currently the governor of Miranda state, which is the country's second-most populous state and includes parts of Caracas as well as largely impoverished towns in the surrounding hills. He served as mayor of the capital's mostly middle-class district of Baruta before he was elected governor in 2008, defeating a close ally of Chavez. He is also a former congressman.

"We need all your good ideas here," Capriles told Lopez during the news conference. "We both have the same dream."

Both leaders repeated Capriles' campaign slogan, "There is a way."

Chavez has been in office for 13 years and is seeking another six-year term in the October election. His approval rating recently has been above 50 percent.

Lopez had gone ahead with his presidential bid despite a Supreme Court ruling in October that had upheld a ban on him holding office yet also said he could be a candidate.

Lopez is on a list of hundreds of politicians who have been barred from holding office in the past decade due to corruption investigations, but he insists he is innocent and notes he was never sentenced in a court.

In its decision, the Supreme Court upheld a decision by the country's top anti-corruption official disqualifying Lopez from holding office until 2014. The Supreme Court also dismissed as "unfeasible" a decision by the Costa Rica-based Inter-American Court of Human Rights that had sided with Lopez and said his political rights had been violated.

"Lopez was running far behind in the polls, and the Supreme Court's defiance of the decision by the Inter-American Court left a big cloud of uncertainty over Lopez's future, even if he were to come out ahead," said Cynthia Arnson, director of the Latin America program at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington. "Capriles has been the front-runner for some time, so the endorsement will continue to bolster his campaign."

Lopez's departure leaves a field of five candidates ahead of the Feb. 12 primary. Trailing Capriles in the polls have been Pablo Perez, the governor of western Zulia state, and congresswoman Maria Corina Machado. Also running are Diego Arria, a former Venezuelan ambassador to the United Nations, and politician Pablo Medina.

Capriles urged Venezuelans to turn out in large numbers for the primary vote. As for Lopez's support, Capriles said: "This is an alliance with a view fixed on Oct. 7."

Gabrielle Giffords' Resignation Sparks Special Election (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., has announced her resignation from her congressional seat to focus full time on her rehabilitation from injuries brought on by a gunshot wound to the inflicted over a year ago, according to CNN.

The resignation has sparked a special election for her seat, with a primary to take place in April, according to the National Journal, with a general election between the Democrat and Republican winners in June. While the redrawn 8th District is slightly more Democratic, since the special election is being held to fill the remainder of Giffords' term, it will be held in the old district.

Candidates have not stepped forward, but Tucson News Now suggests there are a number on both sides of the aisle who might run. On the Republican side, State Senator Frank Atenori, Dave Sitton, a local sports broadcaster, Jesse Kelly, who ran against Giffords in 2010, and Adam Hanson are possibilities. Democrats include state legislators Paula Aboud, Steve Farley and Matt Heinz, as well as Giffords' chief of state Pia Carusone and state director Ron Barber.

While the old 8th District leans Republican, Giffords won re-election of 2010 despite that contest being a Republican wave election. Because of her public struggle to recover from the shooting, Giffords remains extremely popular in her home district. It is uncertain whether that popularity would translate to a Democratic candidate.

The Republicans running for the seat will have to be very careful how they campaign. Giffords is untouchable. How the winner of the Republican primary campaigns will depend on who the Democrats choose in their contest. Likely both candidates will present themselves as a bipartisan, reach across the aisle politician that Giffords presented herself as in her own campaigns.

How to deal with issues like Obamacare will be a delicate question as well. Giffords was for it, but her constituents are against it. Health care as an issue touches on Giffords' rehab struggle.

Of course an endorsement from Giffords would likely seal the deal and retain her district in her party's column. Very likely, therefore, national Republicans will not view the special election as a high priority,

Newsmaker: Megaupload a story of Dotcom boom and bust (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Among the roll-call of hip-hop artists and other celebrities plugging Megaupload.com's digital storage services in an online promotional video, a cameo from the website's founder would have gone unnoticed by many.

As the voiceover boasts of the site's billion users and four percent share of all Internet traffic, a colossal figure clad in black appears in a music studio.

"Bit by bit, it's a hit, it's a hit!" founder Kim Dotcom booms in a slight accent that hints at his German roots.

The hits may have just run out for Dotcom, also known as Kim Schmitz and Kim Tim Jim Investor, who spent his 38th birthday on Saturday in a New Zealand jail after 70 police raided his country estate and cut him out of a safe room he had barricaded himself in.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation, which requested the raid, says Dotcom masterminded a scheme that made more than $175 million in a few short years by copying and distributing music, movies and other copyrighted content without authorization.

Megaupload's U.S. lawyer said the company merely offered online storage, would "vigorously defend itself" and was trying to recover its servers and get back online.

The arrest marks the latest twist in the checkered story of Dotcom, a former hacker who got his first computer at nine before going on to build an Internet fortune and friendships with music stars including Alicia Keys, Will.i.am and P.Diddy who appeared on the Megaupload.com promo video.

EARLY STARTER

Born in the German city of Kiel, Dotcom -- who was then known as Schmitz -- grew up in northern Germany.

As a child, he made copies of computer games to sell to his friends, and in the early days of the Internet, began hacking into computers via telephones, according to reputed German daily Die Welt.

Schmitz has made no secret of his controversial past as a cyber-raider, hacking into computer networks at NASA, the Pentagon and at least one major bank.

As the hacker pioneer generation came of age, so did Schmitz. After being convicted of computer hacking in 1998, he made a fortune providing computer security consulting and venture capital investment via the firm Kimvestor.

According to German magazine Der Spiegel, Schmitz once boasted he would become one of the richest men in the world. How was he so sure? "I'm smarter than Bill Gates," he said.

Schmitz, who also called himself Kimble after the wrongly convicted doctor-on-the-run in the film "The Fugitive," became well known for his lavish lifestyle as much as his computer skills.

He briefly became a fixture in Germany's nouveau riche party scene and made his own film, shot with a hand-held camera, Kimble Goes Monaco. The hulking Schmitz -- reportedly two meters tall and weighing more than 130 kg -- was often shown in Germany's tabloid press with fast cars and a model on his arm.

Schmitz's website at one point featured photographs of him racing cars, shooting an assault rifle and flying around the world in his private jet on lavish vacations.

"I have a different attitude towards money than those who rather hoard it," he said during an appearance on the Harald Schmidt Show, a popular late-night talk show in Germany. "I would rather spend it and have a lot of fun."

A documentary about the outlaw Gumball 3000 road race of 2001 by German TV station RTL filmed Schmitz driving the Russian leg of the rally in excess of 240 kph (150 mph) in a 480-horsepower Mercedes sedan, and then laughing when an opponent is pulled over by police in Finland. "Our competition is out of the way!" he says in jubilation.

Schmitz liked promoting himself through stunts such as offering up to $10 million for information leading to the arrest of Osama bin Laden in the wake of terror attacks against the United States.

THE NAME'S DOTCOM. KIM DOTCOM

But in 2002, he was convicted in what was then the largest insider-trading case in German history.

Prosecutors said Schmitz bought shares in an online business and drove up the share price by announcing plans to invest millions to rescue the company from insolvency. After selling his shares for a profit, he fled to Thailand, was arrested and deported.

A Munich court sentenced the then 28-year-old to 20 months probation and a 100,000-euro fine.

After his conviction, Schmitz disappeared from public view, reappearing a couple of years ago in New Zealand, having legally changed his name to Dotcom.

He and his family moved into a multimillion dollar mansion outside Auckland and were granted residency after promising to invest at least NZ$10 million ($8 million) in New Zealand.

The leased 20-hectare property, set in rolling hills northwest of Auckland, is one of the largest and most expensive in the country, featuring manicured lawns, fountains, pools, palm-lined paths and extensive security.

In an interview with the New Zealand Herald Newspaper last year, Dotcom said residency would allow him, his wife, Mona, and their three children to live in a country that would become a "rare paradise on Earth."

"I might be one of the most flamboyant characters New Zealand has ever seen but my intentions are good and I would like to see New Zealand flourish to its fullest potential," he said.

Dotcom reportedly paid $500,000 for a massive New Year's Eve fireworks display over Auckland which he and Mona watched from their private helicopter.

The FBI estimates that Dotcom personally made around $115,000 a day during 2010 from his empire. The list of property to be forfeited, including almost 20 luxury cars, one of them a pink Cadillac, hints at a lavish lifestyle which may be about to be put on hold.

Dotcom and three fellow accused will appear in a New Zealand court on Monday and face extradition to the United States. ($1 = 1.2433 New Zealand dollars)

Ukraine's Yanukovich refuses to relent in Tymoshenko case (Reuters)

KIEV (Reuters) ? Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich appeared on Sunday to rule out any prospect of opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko being freed, saying those responsible for signing a 2009 gas deal with Russia on "enslaving" terms should be punished.

Tymoshenko, in a statement from prison where she is serving a seven-year jail sentence, called on all opposition forces to unite to defeat Yanukovich's Regions Party in a parliamentary election next October.

Her jailing last October for abuse of office, linked to the 2009 gas contract she brokered as prime minister, has led to a crisis in relations between the ex-Soviet republic and the West.

The United States and the European Union say the trial was politically motivated; in December the EU withheld completion of agreements on political association and a free trade zone with Ukraine in protest over her jailing.

Tymoshenko's trial and conviction are widely seen as a settling of scores between rival groups in the ex-Soviet republic.

Tymoshenko was a key player in the "Orange Revolution" street protests in 2004-2005 which overturned Yanukovich's first bid for the presidency. He made a comeback and narrowly defeated her in a run-off vote in February 2010.

Despite the EU pressure, justice officials have opened fresh criminal cases against Tymoshenko and she has been moved from police detention in the capital, Kiev, to a remote prison camp in Kharkiv, some 500 km (310 miles) to the east.

The Ukrainian leadership says the 2009 gas deal saddled the country with an exorbitant price for gas and committed it to importing volumes of Russian gas it does not need.

"Ukraine has become hostage to enslaving gas agreements ... which have caused the country huge losses, billions of losses. We have been left with a huge external debt. Those who, regardless of their office, pushed Ukraine to the abyss must bear responsibility before the Ukrainian people," Yanukovich told a ceremony on Sunday.

Several thousand opposition supporters used a rally in the centre of Kiev, marking the day when eastern Ukraine joined the west of the country, to protest at the government's policies and call for Tymoshenko to be freed.

In a statement read out to the crowd, Tymoshenko called on all opposition parties to unite in a single democratic opposition force. "One team - one victory - this is the only slogan with which the opposition should arm itself today," she said.

In what might prove to be a significant development in the coming months, several opposition parties later issued a statement saying they would unite to field a single candidate in single-mandate constituencies at next October's election.

These will account for half the seats in the Ukraine parliament, the other half coming from party list voting.

The popularity of Yanukovich's Regions Party is sagging at present, and a united opposition might make it difficult for the Regions Party to re-establish a stranglehold on parliament after the election.

Tymoshenko's daughter told Reuters last week that her mother's life was "at risk" in the Kharkiv jail where she is being held because of her deteriorating health.

She said her mother had been unable to get up unaided since early November because of recurring back pain.

(AP) ? South Carolina's Sen. Jim DeMint, a tea party leader, says the South Carolina Republican primary is "clearly a two-man race" now between Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney.

DeMint has steadfastly declined to endorse any of the GOP candidates, although he supported Romney four years ago. Asked about his persistent neutrality on "CBS This Morning," DeMint said, "I don't think there's very many people in South Carolina who are waiting for me to tell them how to vote."

He said he's focusing more on trying to win a Republican majority in the Senate.

DeMint says he thinks Gingrich handled a question about marital infidelity "as well as he could have." But he also said he didn't know what effect that might have on the outcome of Saturday's primary voting.

Union Pacific 4Q profit up 24 pct on higher prices (AP)

OMAHA, Neb. ? Union Pacific Corp.'s fourth-quarter profit jumped 24 percent as the nation's largest freight railroad operator increased prices and hauled more cargo.

CEO Jim Young said he expects the economy and the railroad's revenue will continue growing in 2012.

"Looking ahead, we expect continued slow but steady economic growth in 2012," Young said Thursday. "The diversity of our unique railroad franchise will continue to provide growth opportunities in various markets."

Union Pacific shares rose $3.82, or 3.5 percent, to $113.64 in midday trading.

The Omaha-based railroad company said that its net income rose to $964 million, or $1.99 per share, during the last three months of 2011, up from $775 million, or $1.56 per share, a year ago.

Its revenue grew 16 percent to $5.1 billion from $4.41 billion a year ago.

Union Pacific said the carloads it carried grew about 3 percent overall during the quarter with strong growth in chemical, automotive, energy and industrial shipping. The only slight volume declines came in UP's agricultural and intermodal divisions.

Analysts surveyed by FactSet expected Union Pacific to report earnings of $1.82 per share on revenue of $5.05 billion.

Union Pacific's results offer insight into the nation's economic health because of the variety of cars, crops, chemicals, lumber and containers of imported goods the railroad carries.

Railroad officials said they expect small improvements in auto sales, housing construction and the nation's gross domestic product to help Union Pacific's profit grow in 2012. UP predicted that it will see strong growth in the petroleum products, vehicles and lumber it carries this year.

Fuel costs soared 36 percent to $935 million from $687 million for Union Pacific during the fourth quarter as the price the railroad paid for diesel fuel grew to an average of $3.16 per gallon.

But Union Pacific was able to limit growth in other major costs. The railroad said compensation costs grew only 4 percent to $1.2 billion as it continued to slowly recall furloughed employees.

UP had 1,030 employees furloughed at the end of 2011 and about 600 locomotives stored. A year ago, about 1,500 employees remained furloughed, down from 4,200 at the end of 2009.

Young said the railroad industry is making progress in resolving its national labor negotiations. Ten of the 13 unions have approved contracts and two others are in the process of voting on tentative agreements. He said he hopes the industry will be able to reach agreement with the remaining union, the Brotherhood of Maintenance Way Employees, before the current cooling-off period ends Feb. 8.

"Both parties are very motivated to get a deal done," Young said in an interview with The Associated Press.

For all of 2011, Union Pacific reported net income of $3.29 billion, or $6.72 per share, up from $2.78 billion, or $5.53 per share, in 2010. Annual revenue grew 15 percent to $19.56 billion from the previous year's $16.97 billion.

Union Pacific is the nation's largest railroad with more than 32,400 miles of track in 23 states between the West, the Midwest and the Gulf coast.

Russia says will stand firm with China on Syria (Reuters)

MOSCOW (Reuters) ? Russia will offer Washington no explanation for arms deliveries to Syria and together with China will prevent the U.N. Security Council from approving any military intervention in the conflict-torn nation, its foreign minister said on Wednesday.

Using his annual news conference to draw lines in the sand on Syria, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said veto-holding Security Council members Russia and China would stand firm against foreign intervention.

"We will insist - and we have an understanding with our Chinese colleagues that this is our common position - that these fundamental points be retained in any decision that may be taken by the U.N. Security Council," Lavrov said.

"If somebody intends to use force ... it will be on their conscience. They will not receive any authority from the Security Council," said Lavrov, who also emphasized that Russia and China oppose any sanctions against Syria.

Russia has been the most vocal supporter of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad during a 10-month government crackdown that the United Nations says has killed more than 5,000 civilians, refusing to join calls for him to step down.

Russia joined China in October to veto a Western-backed resolution against Assad's government, saying the domestic opposition shared blame for the violence and that it would have opened the door for military action like NATO's Libya operation.

Russia submitted its own draft resolution last month and proposed a new version this week, but Lavrov indicated the council was deeply divided over the issue of where blame lies for the bloodshed and the possibility of military intervention.

He said Western members of the Security Council "are categorically determined to exclude from the resolution the phrase that (says) nothing in it can be interpreted as allowing the use of force."

'PLAYING GAMES'

Western diplomats in New York, however, suggested that Russia was playing for time in negotiations on the draft resolution. Two days of negotiations on revising the Russian text failed to resolve the deadlock and bridge differences between the Western and Russian camps.

"Russia's playing games," a Western diplomat told Reuters on condition of anonymity. "Negotiations aren't really going anywhere. China and others would probably agree not to block a tougher resolution, but Russia isn't compromising."

The United States, France and Britain, along with Russia and China, are permanent Security Council members with the power to block any resolution from passage.

Moscow has close ties with Syria, a leading client for arms sales, and its naval maintenance facility in the port of Tartus is a rare outpost for Russia's shrunken post-Soviet military.

A Russian-operated ship carrying what a Cypriot official said was bullets arrived in Tartus last week from St. Petersburg after being held up in Cyprus.

The United States said it had raised concerns about the ship with Russia, but Lavrov said there was no need for an explanation.

"We don't consider it necessary to explain ourselves or justify ourselves, because we are not violating any international agreements or any (U.N.) Security Council resolutions," Lavrov told an annual news conference.

The U.S. envoy to the United Nations, Susan Rice, said on Tuesday that the United States "would have very grave concern about arms flows into Syria from any source" and that it was unfortunate there was no U.N. arms embargo on Syria.

Russia says such an embargo would cut off supplies to the government while enabling armed opponents to receive weapons illegally. Lavrov repeated on Wednesday that Russia and China oppose any sanctions on Syria.

"The red line is quite clear: we will not support any sanctions, because unilateral sanctions have been imposed without any consultation with Russia or China," he said.

Syria accounted for 7 percent of Russia's total of $10 billion in arms deliveries abroad in 2010, according to the Russian defense think tank CAST.

An unnamed military source was quoted as saying in December that Russia had delivered anti-ship Yakhont missiles to Syria.

I've had my laptop for almost 4 years now and it's still chugging along fine. What am I missing out on a brand spanking new laptop? Less oily keys? Non dusty display? I don't game on zee PC. I don't edit video. I don't do anything on a computer but go on winding Wikipedia knowledge trails and read about sports. So screw boring computers. Screw them to mundane hell. Chef Paula Deen hid diabetes, pushed high-fat food (AP)

NEW YORK ? Paula Deen, the Southern belle of butter and heavy cream, is making no apologies for waiting three years to disclose she has diabetes while continuing to dish up deep-fried cheesecake and other high-calorie, high-fat recipes on TV.

She said she isn't changing the comfort cooking that made her a star, though it isn't clear how much of it she'll continue to eat while she promotes health-conscious recipes along with a diabetes drug she's endorsing for a Danish company.

"I've always said, `Practice moderation, y'all.' I'll probably say that a little louder now," Deen said Tuesday after revealing her diagnosis on NBC's "Today" show. "You can have diabetes and have a piece of cake. You cannot have diabetes and eat a whole cake."

Health activists and one fellow chef called her a hypocrite for promoting an unhealthy diet along with a drug to treat its likely effects. Deen added her support of the Novo Nordisk company to a collection of lucrative endorsements that include Smithfield ham and Philadelphia Cream Cheese.

Deen, who will turn 65 on Thursday, said she kept her diagnosis private as she and her family figured out what to do, presumably about her health and a career built solidly on Southern cooking. Among her recipes: deep-fried cheesecake covered in chocolate and powdered sugar, and a quiche that calls for a pound of bacon.

"I really sat on this information for a few years because I said, `Oh, my gosh, what am I going to do about this? Is my life fixing to change? Am I no longer going to like my life?" she asked. "I had to have time to adjust and soak it all in and get up all the information that I could."

While Deen, who lives in Savannah, Ga., has cut out the sweet tea she routinely drank straight through to bedtime and taken up treadmill walking, she plans few changes on the air.

Government doctors say that being overweight (as Deen is), over 45 (as Deen is) and inactive (as Deen was) increase the risk for developing Type 2 diabetes. Growth of the disease in the U.S. has been closely tied to escalating obesity rates. Roughly 23 million Americans are believed to have the most common Type 2 diabetes; patients' bodies either do not produce enough insulin or do not use it efficiently, allowing excess sugar, or glucose, to accumulate in the blood.

Deen is the pitch person for Novo Nordisk's new online program, Diabetes in a New Light, which offers tips on food preparation, stress management and working with doctors on treatment. She has contributed diabetes-friendly recipes to the website and takes the company's drug Victoza, a once-daily noninsulin injection that had global sales of $734 million in the first nine months of 2011.

A recipe for Lady and Sons Lasagna, on her diabetes-conscious site, uses extra-lean ground beef and cans of unsalted tomato sauce and diced tomatoes, for a dish estimated at 260 calories a serving. Turn to Deen's collection of recipes on The Food Network's site and find Grandmother Paul's fried chicken, with Crisco shortening for frying, or baked French Toast casserole, with two cups of half-and-half and a half-pound of butter. No calorie counts are estimated.

The Novo Nordisk site links to promotional materials for the drug Victoza. Company spokeswoman Ambre Morley and Deen declined to disclose how much she is being paid.

Deen said she had no help or advice to offer the public when she was first diagnosed, but feels she's making a contribution now.

None of that matters much to outspoken chef Anthony Bourdain, who has never been a Deen fan. He told Eater.com of her diabetes announcement: "When your signature dish is hamburger in between a doughnut, and you've been cheerfully selling this stuff knowing all along that you've got Type 2 diabetes ... it's in bad taste if nothing else."

In Yuba, Wis., Judd Dvorak watches Deen cook on TV all the time with his wife. He thinks Bourdain has the right idea. Dvorak said it's wrong for Deen to accept money to become a paid spokeswoman for a diabetes drug after espousing a cooking style that helps lead to diabetes.

"It would be like someone who goes on TV and brags about how wonderful it is to smoke two packs of cigarettes a day and then when he or she gets lung cancer becomes a paid spokesperson for nicotine patches," Dvorak said. "I feel it is in very poor taste and if she chose to become an unpaid spokesperson for the American Diabetes Association, that would be a better way for her to make a difference and help fight this horrible disease."

Deen also smokes, but she considers her heavy-handed food only one piece of the diabetes puzzle, with genetics, lifestyle, stress, age and race. She said she would never advocate smoking and her diabetes is "well under control."

While making changes in her personal life, she doesn't think her TV shows ? there are three ? will look much different. She spends about 30 days a year taping, "so I'm not cooking and eating that way every day."

That's something the public doesn't necessarily know. The food, Deen said, isn't really to blame.

"I am who I am," she said. "I think the South gets a bad rap sometimes, saying our food is very unhealthy, but frankly I don't think that's the case. I think it's like any other food, whether it be Italian, French, Cajun. They all can be very high in calories and that's where we have to practice portion control and moderation."

Morley said the company didn't know Deen had diabetes when it approached her about promoting the new health initiative.

"We really just wanted to ask her, `Hey, Paula, do you think we could challenge you to change up some of your recipes and make them diabetes-friendly," Morley said. "And her reply was, `How did you guys know I had diabetes?'"

It was a surprise to the Food Network as well. Network officials found out only last week, said spokesman Jesse Derris.

"As part of the Food Network's family, our only concern is for Paula's health. We will continue to support her as she confronts this new challenge, taking her lead on what future episodes will offer her fans," he said.

Some health experts question the delay between the time Deen was diagnosed with diabetes and her move three years later to promote a healthier way of cooking and living.

"A more responsible approach would have been that once she was diagnosed with diabetes to really emphasize to her viewers the importance of eating a healthy diet," said Michael Jacobson, executive director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest.

U.N. nations say time's up for 'leap second'

It's high noon for the humble leap second.

After 10 years of talks, governments are headed for a showdown vote this week on an issue that pits technological precision against nature's whims.

The United States, France and others are pushing for countries at a U.N. telecom meeting to abolish the leap second, which for 40 years has kept computers in sync with the Earth day.

Leap seconds are necessary to prevent atomic clocks from speeding ahead of solar time. They are added at irregular intervals, effectively stretching atomic time by a heartbeat to make up for the irregular wobble in the Earth's rotation.

Critics warn that scrapping the leap second would break the last link between the passing of time and the course of the sun across the sky. But backers say machines shouldn't any longer be tethered to the imprecise cycle of sunrise and sunset.

"This would be an important decision because the problem of introducing the leap second would disappear and we would have a more steady time than we have today," Vincent Meens, an official at the International Telecommunication Union who has chaired technical talks on the issue, said Tuesday.

Operators of cell phone networks, financial markets and air traffic control systems could then rely on the near-absolute precision offered by atomic clocks without having to worry about stopping their systems for the length of a heartbeat every year or two.

"Most of the people who operate time services favor discontinuing leap seconds," said Judah Levine, a physicist at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Boulder, Colo.

"The main problem is that the leap second is usually implemented by stopping the clock for one second. However, the world doesn't stop," he said.

Satellite navigation systems such as GPS don't use leap seconds, which adds confusion, said Levine. "In addition, the leap second occurs in the middle of the day in Asia and Australia, which is particularly inconvenient."

In a world increasingly reliant on computers for mission-critical measurements, any glitch could be costly as well as fatal, said Elisa Felicitas Arias, director of the time department at the Paris-based International Bureau of Weights and Measures.

"You can make a dramatic error if, for example, you are trying to land an aircraft," she said, noting that rocket launches, too, are never scheduled on days when a leap second might occur. "This is something we are trying to correct."

Critics say the risks are overblown and leap seconds have been used successfully since 1972, despite being hard to predict more than six months in advance.

China has warned that any change could hurt astronomers, who need to be able to compare observations spanning thousands of years as part of their work.

Canada, too, has raised objections to the proposed plan, while Britain has warned that it could spell the end of Greenwich Mean Time, or GMT, as a meaningful measure.

"Leap seconds are an inconvenience to the telecommunications people, but there are many other users of time who should be considered," said Ken Seidelmann, a research professor at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville and former director of astrometry at the U.S. Naval Observatory.

Killing off the leap second would also result in atomic clocks slowly outrunning the solar day by a rate of about 90 seconds a century. After many thousands of years, atomic clocks would say it's midday when outside the sun has yet to rise.

"This is replacing a small problem with a big problem further down the line," said Daniel Gambis, an astronomer at the Paris Observatory and the man who alerted timekeepers around the world to the next leap second, due on June 30.

Arias said solutions could be found for such problems, but conceded that severing the link between the proposed new standard time ? as measured by atomic clocks ? and the solar time people are accustomed to might seem troubling to many.

Still, the time for change has come, she argued.

Unless a last minute consensus is reached, delegates at the ITU meeting in Geneva are expected to vote on the issue Thursday or Friday.

3 more women held in Mexico child-trafficking case

(AP) ? Mexican investigators detained three more women in the city of Guadalajara in connection with an apparent child-trafficking ring that aimed to supply babies to Irish couples, authorities said Monday.

Authorities also took a tenth child, a 9-month old boy, into custody, the Jalisco state prosecutor's office said in a statement.

It said the three women were detained at a ranch in Tonala, a suburb of Guadalajara, while taking care of the baby boy. They told authorities they had been hired as nannies to take care of children in the process of being adopted, prosecutors said.

Police have raided several ranches to look for more evidence in the case, investigators said.

Authorities last week detained four women and seized nine children, all of them between two months and two years of age.

Prosecutors first opened the investigation last week following the arrest of a 21-year-old woman who was accused by her sister-in-law of trying to sell one of her children and of "renting" the other one.

The woman led authorities to three other women, all in their early 30s, who took part in the "renting" of the babies, and seized nine children, including the 21-year-old woman's two kids. The other seven were seized from the Irish couples.

The first woman arrested claimed she had signed a contract with a law firm to allow her child to be photographed in different places in Jalisco state for advertising purposes. She told investigators that her baby was taken for 15 days and that she received $500 pesos ($36 dollars) per day as payment, prosecutors said.

The other three women reportedly took the child and several others to a hotel in Guadalajara where they met with the Irish couples who believed they were going to adopt them. The couples then took the children to the nearby town of Ajijic, a lakeside resort popular with American and Canadian retirees, where they were staying while the adoptions were finished.

Officials are investigating whether the Irish couples and Mexican mothers were being tricked by the smuggling ring.

The Irish Embassy in Mexico said in a statement that it's providing consular advice to the couples involved and that the Irish council had traveled to Guadalajara to meet with the Irish citizens and local Mexican authorities.

Police are also looking for at least two lawyers with the Guadalajara law firm Lopez Lopez y Asociados who were allegedly processing the adoptions in neighboring Colima state. The lawyers purportedly advertised in local newspaper for expectant mothers who wanted to give their children up for adoption.

Investigator said the foreign couples had been giving $1,200 pesos ($188 dollars) per week to the mothers since pregnancy, and paying for their medical attention.
